but is that really down to the coaches' style of play or the fact that they have been cherry picking the top talent from around europe for the last 5 years? the bit i have bolded. i understand this is the point of the system. however this is where the merits of keeping a system despite the players on the pitch vs adapting the system to fit the players can be argued. he didn't have the pace at CB to play that high line against aguero and it lost them 3 goals and a player. how will it work v ronaldo/bale? this is why i'd rather a coach that can adapt a formation to fit his players like LVG has done constantly to deal with the injuries and suspensions. Yes, it is down to the coach, if Guardiola didn't want them to play such a high line then they wouldn't. They do cherry pick top talent but then so do every other top team, and whilst it certainly helps being able to do that, it doesn't always work as shown by Madrid in the past. You need a coach to put everything together and make it work. You're blaming the system here when in reality it was down to three individual errors. Does Guardiola scrap his preferred setup each time they come up against some pace? No. If Benatia, Alonso and Boateng hadn't fucked up, we wouldn't be having this conversation. That's the thing, I don't agree with the last line at all. It's not a case of LvG adapting, it's about him being forced to, and as we've seen so far this year, a lot of the time he's not being very successful at it. Bit daft to suggest Guardiola cannot adapt a formation, give that he's one of the most successful managers of the modern era... I've seen him playing multiple different formations since joining Bayern to accomodate the attacking options he has (not that this adapting a formation bollocks really means anything at all). the penalty/red card was an individual error, agreed. however the situation that aguero was in prior to being taken down was not as a result of an individual error. this was due to a simple ball over the top and aguero's pace exposing bayern's high line. and i would argue that yes, guardiola should scrap the high line when he comes up against a genuinely world class striker with pace that plays on the shoulder of the last man. it's just asking for trouble not to.

I haven't really paid all that much attention to LVG's press conferences, but for those of you who have: how truthful has he been? What's his record on following through when he claims players are fit or if they will be available? I remember Fergie using conferences as diversionary tactics, particularly things like claiming Rooney wouldn't play - and then magically Rooney is in the starting lineup. When I have read LVG's statements, he seems very forthcoming and does not appear to be playing games. Any thoughts?

"I don't see any influence from me when I am there shouting," he said. "They are not understanding you.
"With the fans in the Premier League shouting so much, they can't understand you.
"That's why I'm always on the bench. You have trained them to read the game by themselves all week.
"It is much more important that they are more involved with the game, that they make their own decisions. It is like a child - you educate them."

Fucking love this guy - Klopp ? Fizzed. Pep ? Spent money on the best team in Europe and not as good as the team he took over. Still early days but he's a breath of fresh air after Moyseh and even Fergie wasn't the best value with the media. tailor-made for us.

30/12/2014 17:05, Report by Gemma ThompsonVan Gaal thanks and praises United supporters Louis van Gaal has praised and thanked Manchester United fans for their continued support throughout his first six months with the club. The manager was asked by reporters on Tuesday what had stood out most during the opening part of his first season in charge and while van Gaal was keen to praise his side’s fighting spirit, he also paid tribute to the backing he and the players have received from supporters.
"The thing that has pleased me most is the fans, they are amazing," he told MUTV. "We started the season poorly, but in spite of that they have supported us, they have great belief in their squad and manager. I want to thank them because they've been very important in our weaker moments.
