Hello All, Now that the transfer window is shut and LVG has the squad he wants (a very very good one now IMO), what do think is the best starting formation and starting XI in your opinion. Assume everyone is fit and available for selection. Mine would be 4-2-1-2 ;
--------------- DDG -------------- Rafael ---- Jones ---- Rojo ---- Shaw -------------- Blind --------------- ------- Herrera -----Di Maria ------ -------------- Mata --------------- ------ RvP ---------- Falcao -----
Rooney has to earn his place. And he wont if he again has those horrible first touches . Rojo in place of Evans just coz of Evans' horrible form. A confident Evans > Rojo (IMO)

Honestly I think Di Maria should be the one behind the strikers, not Mata. He's a wonderfully gifted player but he's one of the worst culprits for slowing down every attack. If you limit him to providing ammunition and creativity for the forwards then hopefully they can then speed up the attack.
Rooney starting over any of RvP, Falcao, Mata or Di Maria is just a joke. The guy is massively inferior to all four of them. He'll start every game though of course, captain fucking marvel.

I'm not Rooney's biggest fan in the world, but jesus christ, people do realise he is a world class player right?

The problem Rooney has is that while he's a good 9 or 10, Mata is a better 10 and RVP & Falcao are both better 9s.

I'm not Rooney's biggest fan in the world, but jesus christ, people do realise he is a world class player right? He really isn't. I had to laugh getting out of bed yesterday morning and someone on 5Live was saying something about our potential strikers/attacking options and mentioned RvP, Falcao, Di Maria and Rooney. He doesn't fit in that sentence, he just isn't that good. He's a stats player, he doesn't actually perform to World Class levels.

He gets a brace against reasonable PL opposition but fails too may times on the big stage. When we need an impact like last Saturday he was nowhere to be seen. He's also a poor leader, we need a better inspirational captain. He should have gone to Chelski or PSG last year.

------------------DDG
RAFAEL JONES ROJO SHAW
------------------BLIND ------HERRERA------ Di Maria ------------------MATA
------ROONEY --- FALCAO
Wing backs provide width. Blind drops deep. Rooney ahead of Rvp purely because he's more mobile. He might not be quick but he's quicker than rvp. Rvp on for last 40-30 minutes of a game. Minimising the risk of injury and keepin him fresh.

I agree with this unless RVP is fully healthy. Di Maria will also provide width as he'll drift wide.

An interesting article. linkHere's the opening "There is no doubt Manchester United’s move for Radamel Falcao came as a jolt for the football world, with all the questions it leaves about how Louis van Gaal can possibly shoehorn everyone in, Galáctico-style, but the truth is that the people in charge at Old Trafford decided long ago that a frontline including the considerable talents of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie was not dynamic enough for a club of their ambitions. David Moyes was the first person to identify the issue and initially thought Edinson Cavani had the directness and penetrative qualities to give the team a more vibrant attacking edge. Moyes told Ed Woodward, United’s chief executive, during one strategy meeting that the Uruguayan would “score goals for fun”. A meeting was arranged with his agent, Claudio Anelluci, and United were given the firm impression Cavani wanted it to happen. However, Moyes watched Cavani three times after the turn of the year and he was poor every time. Paris Saint-Germain wanted £65m and Moyes, with deficiencies in midfield and defence, decided the money was better spent elsewhere." It would lead credence to the idea that Falcao will be the focal point of the attack, with Rooney being moved either wide or to midfield as his current skill set is not that of a 9 or 10.

It's clear most people favour returning to a back four - 3-5-2 would be great IF you have good enough players in the vital wingback positions - it's clear Young and Valencia are NOT wingbacks - both were at fault for goals conceded in the league this season.
With the players we have after the window I'd play a 4-3-3 which is very flexible because that 4-3-3 can change to 4-1-3-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-2-4, 4-1-2-1-2 etc when needed without changess to personnel
----------DDG--------- Rafa Jones Rojo Shaw ----------Blind--------- ---Herrera Di Maria--- ----------Mata--------- ------RVP Falcao------
Rooney covers/rotates with any of the front 3 - same with Adnan
TBH I love Rafa but he can look world class one minute and a mug the next - he would be the weak point in the team - I was surprised we weren't linked with someone like Dani Alves as a short term (2/3 years) option - especially now Barca have signed his replacement - and we still need a bit of class to cover the Herrera/Di Maria positions but I'm convinced we'll get Strootman in January if LVG is happy he's proved his fitness

This one for me is spot on.

Goals, goals, goals. Solid defensively as well. RVP will be the casualty.

It will be ridiculous to persist with 3-5-2 after signing ADM and Falcao.
Regardless of formation, Blind-Herrera-ADM has to play in mid for me except maybe big games. 41212/4312/433 are the ones I can think of utilizing best players for max effect.
