he looks like a beast alright, but some of those tackles i can't work out how he won the ball. he seems to go to ground very easily/readily.
looks dominant in the air, and i love the aggression and willingness to win the ball before the striker turns. similar in some respects to rojo.

You are right in that respect. His aggression may lead to mistakes. Goes to ground readily seems more appropriate than easily. If you look at his stats, he is prone to mistakes, due to the risks he takes. He needs a partner who stays on his feet, whilst he attacks. Just a few stats where I compared him with Hummels, Laporte & Smalling to get a perspective of his game. Has highest average tackles won per game & also has highest average tackles lost per game. Tells us that he loves tackling. Smalling had least tackles won & tackles lost averages. Should be a good partnership as Smalling can cover up for him. Has lowest successful takeons @50% whereas Smalling is the clear winner @84.21%. Again, means Smalling has the pace to cover up. High on defensive errors & Errors leading to goals whereas Smalling has minimum (this season) Where Otamendi scores is Interceptions, Blocks & Clearances where he is a clear outperformer which necessarily is not Smalling's strength I think the low scores in certain aspects are not particularly negatives. More of Vidalesque, just needs a Rio. So, though there are some errors in his game, a stable & pacy partner should be able to solidify our defence. After all defence is all about partnerships.
