Well if you're all wondering why under "Label" it says Geffen I'll fill you in with the story behind The Game and Dr Dre's split before I get into a review.
The Game has been signed to Aftermath/Interscope Records since 2001, for three years he was left in the background without making any noise until G Unit made a name for themselves and in order to get at all markets of Rap (EastCoast covered by Lloyd Banks/Yayo/50, SouthSide covered by Young Buck), The Game was signed to G Unit to cover the WestSide.
50 Cent and Dr Dre launched him into the mainstream helping him making The Documentary an album which went multiplatinum. 50 Cent, Dr Dre and The Game were all making money off the success.
50 Cent's feuds with Ja Rule, Fat Joe and Nas escalated in the background of the Documentary's success and 50 called The Game up to record a verse on his diss song for The Massacre album, Piggy Bank. The Game refused to give his backing and was thrown out of the group.
The Game got together with his Black Wall Street group and launched into lyrical beef with 50 Cent & G Unit despite a temporary public truce. 50 Cent didn't spend much time replying to The Game (deciding instead to release movies, video games, etc) and The Game's diss songs were falling on deaf ears in G Unit.
Dr Dre warned The Game to stop the beef, his record label he had worked hard to build launching names like Eminem & 50 Cent was under threat due to the beef. The Game continued.
50 Cent made it publicly known The Game had been dropped and Dr Dre would not work with him atleast eight months ago, but The Game insisted otherwise, deciding to call his upcoming album the "Doctor's Advocate", the Doctor being Dre.
Fans thought The Game was still on Aftermath until about 4 weeks ago when it was made clear he had been dropped off the Aftermath by Dre due to the beef. If The Game had not been dropped, Aftermath was under risk and 50 Cent would still be making money off a man he had beef with due to a contractual agreement.
So, no Dre, no 50 could the Game really make an album as good as the Documentary? No hypnotic hooks from 50, no bumping, legendary beats from Dre. Even Eminem and Jay-Z said "No" to participation in the album.
Despite everything going against him The Game has brought together a very good album. Not as good as The Documentary but very good nevertheless.
Scott Storch, Just Blaze & Kanye West have helped with the production side and Kurupt, Snoop, Daz, Will.I.Am & Busta Rhymes have added verses to some of his songs.
The single songs are "Let's Ride" and "One Blood". Bringing the WestCoast back is his main aim and The Game does that.
"Compton" is a track which does that, featuring production and a hook by Black Eyed Pea's Will.I.Am, is something N.W.A would drop a verse too.
"One Night" is a song where he talks deeply about his "friends" turning his back on him, as for "Wouldn't Get Far" featuring Kanye West, he murders video vixens and Kanye's part in the track is great.
The best track on the album has to be "Doctor's Advocate" with Busta Rhymes, he spills his heart about betraying his childhood idol Dr. Dre and says sorry for turning his back-
"Dre, I didn't mean to turn my back on you/ But I'm a man, and sometimes a man do what he gotta do/ Remember I'm from Compton too/ I saw you and Eazy and them so I started wearing Khaki suits".
He also teams up with Nas in another apology to Dre, "Why You Hate The Game", the last track on the album making sure it goes out with a bang!
So, The Game made an album without the help of the two who made him, Dre & 50. The album is great but will live in the shadow of the masterpiece that was "The Documentary" as the song says, "When Doc says "it's a wrap!", It's a wrap, it's still Aftermath and ain't NOTHIN' after that!" - This album has certaintly proved it to be.
