It's the last days of Adolf Hitler, April 1945, and Hitler's personal secretary Traudl Junge finds herself in the Der Fuhrer's bunker. Facing inevitable defeat, Hilter's moods range from defiance to fight or flee, remain loyal or opt for self-preservation. Eva Braun parties while Magda Goebbels kills her children. The movie goes on to show how Hitler and Eva lived their last hours in the Bunker.
No fake emotions, no Hollywoodisation of History for American audiences,Der Untergang is certainly one of the best period films ever. Hitler, the most odious figure in History, is portrayed not in a sympathetic way but as he was: a man, persuaded that he was doing the right thing; with painstaking realism, and aided by one of the most riveting performances ever, the film shows that there is a monster inside every one of us, living side by side with more gentle traits. Superlative acting, awesome script, overwhelming presentation of the subject matter, a near-perfect film.
I downloaded this film and wathed it last night, it's truly amazing and the performance of Adolf Hitler is one of the best in film history.
It's actually on tonight (by coincidence) on channel 4 "Downfall"

I find most things to do with Nazi ww2 quite interesting, and it was great to see a more realistic side to Hitler and a great depiction of his last days. It is a long film though and all in German.

Gonna watch it, thanks for the reminder, I've missed it everytime it's been on. I did Nazi Germany at AS Level in History, was fascinating. Did you know they stuck steel poles up Jewish mens arses as a form of punishment? OUCH! Enough to bring tears to your eyes, unless your names Elton John. There was something on about Mussolini yesterday, saw the last five minutes. Anybody watch it? AND LOL, just thinking of the Family Guy sketch of Hitler's last moments with that women, deciding who takes the poison first.

One of the best bits in the film is when Hitler is sat with his generals and other personel he is pointing at armies on a map and saying "ve vill strike viz zee 9th amrmy" "Mein Fuhrer the 9th army is no longer strong enough" an angy Hitler conrinues "Zen ve vill attack wiv zee 12th army down ze west" But Mein furer there no longer is a 12th army..... A now increasingly angry Hitler clears the room exept for the 5 higest ranked generals.....
"That was an order! Steiner's assault was an order! Who do you think you are to dare disobey an order I give? So this is what it has come to! The military has been lying to me. Everybody has been lying to me, even the SS! Our generals are just a bunch of contemptible, disloyal cowards... Our generals are the scum of the German people! Not a shred of honour! They call themselves generals. Years at military academy just to learn how to hold a knife and fork! For years, the military has hindered my plans! They've put every kind of obstacle in my way! What I should have done... was liquidate all the high-ranking officers, as Stalin did! "
I studied history aswell, and mostly about the world wars, and found th efilm really interesting.

The film is largely based on a book by the historian Joachim Fest called 'Inside Hitler’s Bunker: The last days of the Third Reich. A very good book, along with the work of Ian Kershaw recommended reading for anybody interested in the Third Reich and Hitler.

I'm sure it's great but I find all stuff with the Nazi's too disturbing to enjoy at all.

Watched Downfall again the other night and then saw this thread. Absolutely superb film and futher proof if needed, that the Oscars rarely have anything to do with the best movies or performances. Tstosi beat this for best foreign film, and Bruno Ganz wasn't even nominated. IMO this was one of the greatest performances in Cinema in the last 50 years. Scandalous! BTW quite a few of the actors that are in Downfall are also in "Valkyrie" the new Bryan Singer film out later this year. IT's about the bomb plot to kill Hitler. THe trailer looks pretty damn good:
