poor guy Austrian skier Matthias Lanzinger began surgery to have his left leg amputated after breaking it in a World Cup race in Norway.
More StoriesLanzinger undergoes operation on left leg "As a result of irreparable tissue damage an amputation to avoid lasting serious damage is unavoidable," the Austrian ski federation said.
"The condition of the athlete deteriorated in the last few hours to the extent that the medical team considered an immediate operation to be necessary."
Austrian team spokesman Robert Brunner said the operation had started around midday local time after 27-year-old Lanzinger underwent two last-chance surgeries on Monday.
Lanzinger, whose best result was a third place in a World Cup super-G in Beaver Creek in 2005, was having the surgery in Oslo.
Brunner said there had been plans to fly Lanzinger to the Salzburg hospital in which doctor Artur Trost saved fellow Austrian skier Hermann Maier from amputation in 2001.
The plan was dropped given the seriousness of the skier's injuries. The leg suffered a double fracture and was no longer blood irrigated, said Brunner.
Lanzinger crashed spectacularly out of his run in the latter stages of the super-G race on the Olympiabakken course in Kvitfjell, near Lillehammer, and finished in the safety net. He was carried down on a sledge by officials.
The Austrian press was critical of the organisers, questioning why no helicopter was ready near the race course and saying a private helicopter had to be summoned to fly Lanzinger to Oslo.
"It will also be the task of the Austrian ski federation to examine meticulously all the circumstances that led up to the accident and the amputation in order to provide the best possible support for Lanzinger," the federation's statement said.
"The Austrian ski federation will of course do everything it can to ensure Matthias Lanzinger the best possible rehabilitation and to support him in his private and professional future."

So sad I hope he recovers very soon and moves on with his life. Finding a new goal in his life could be very hard, now that it's been turned upside-down.

Finnish ski jumping great Janne Ahonen has retired after spending 15 seasons at international level.
The 30-year-old, nicknamed the Flying Eagle, took silver at both the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics in the team large hill event and has five World Championship golds, including the individual normal hill in 1997 and the individual large hill in 2005.
He finished third overall in this season's World Cup and he has 37 wins to his name in that competition, plus 121 top-three finishes.
Ahonen also won the World Cup in 2004 and 2005 and has taken first place in the Four Hills tournament a record-breaking five times.
"When I stood on the podium after the final event in the Four Hills tournament in January, I made the decision then and there," said Ahonen.
"I felt that the decision came clear, that I don't have to go after a sixth win. I did not tell anyone about it, as I wanted to concentrate on the rest of the season.
"I felt I do not have enough motivation to do all the training anymore. It would have been one more hard summer with thinking about my weight."
He has a total 24 medals in world championship and Olympic ski jumping overall and also has made the longest ski jump ever, 240 meters in 2005 at Planica, which is one metre longer than the world record held by Bjorn Einar Romoren of Norway, but was judged as a fall.
I will miss see him competing against the one Like Morgenstern or Ljoeklsoey but im glad i had the chance to see him flying twice so good luck to Janne for everything.
