Austrian Nordic combined skier Alfred Rainer dies from head injuries after paragliding fall
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - The Austrian Ski Federation says Austrian Nordic combined skier Alfred Rainer has died early Saturday from the severe head injuries he suffered from a paragliding accident last week. He was 20.
Rainer was being kept in an artificial coma at a hospital in Innsbruck after crashing from 20 meters (66 feet) above ground and suffering a craniocerebral injury, a bruised lung and several broken leg bones.
The federation said the accident occurred on Aug. 7 in his hometown of Maria Alm in the province of Salzburg.
Rainer won two bronze medals and a gold medal in the team event at last year's junior world championships in Tarvisio, Italy, and competed on the World Cup circuit since 2007.

Simon Ammann (SUI) took a clear victory in both of the FIS Grand Prix Ski Jumping competitions in Hakuba (JPN). On Saturday, Ammann triumphed with a margin of almost 25 points while in the second competition he won by 7.3 points. Local star Daiki Ito made the home spectators happy by taking the second place in both competitions, along with receiving the Man of the Day award on Saturday. Andreas Kuettel (SUI) finished third on Saturday but had to let Roar Ljoekelsoey (NOR) ahead of him on Sunday, when the Norwegian led after the first round and took the Man of the Day award.
With two victories, Ammann also claimed the lead in the overall Grand Prix rankings in the absence of the former overall leader Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT) in Japan. Ammann is now 17 points ahead of Schlierenzauer as two competitions remain on the summer schedule. Andreas Kofler (AUT) who also skipped the trip to Asia is ranked third. The Grand Prix will continue on 3rd October in Klingenthal (GER).

The autumn coordination group meeting with the organizing committee, FIS, and the television and marketing rights holders, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), for the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo (NOR) took place on Monday, 15th September. In addition to productive working-group discussions, the participants went outside to view the construction work that has now begun at Holmenkollen. On the administrative side, the organizing committee team is developing and is focusing on establishing the working practices and responsibilities of the different roles. Oslo 2011's modern new brand and logo was also presented with the implementation concepts. At the competition site, the legendary Holmenkollen arena, the work has now begun. The K95 normal hill at Midtstuen is the most visible development with the ground work well underway. The time schedule foresees the completion of the competition facilities in good time for the test events, the traditional FIS Nordic World Cup weekend in early March 2010.
