Just hours after the opening ceremony, Greek sprinter Anastasios Gousis became the first athlete of the Games to fail a drugs test.
Television in Greece reported that the 29-year-old returned a positive drugs test from those carried out by Greek anti-doping agency ESKAN before the team left for Japan.
Gousis was due to run in the 200m in Beijing but will now miss out after his positive test.
Greek officials have stepped up their drug-testing policy after the embarrassment caused by sprinters Katerina Thanou and Costas Kenteris missing tests just before they staged the Olympics in Athens four years ago.
As a result a number of athletes have tested positive in recent months, including 11 weightlifters, a boxer and a swimmer.
some things never change just like in Greece 4 years ago

Cooke grabs first GB gold medal Nicole Cooke claimed Britain's first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics by winning a thrilling women's road race. The 25-year-old from Wales timed her finish to perfection, edging ahead of Emma Johansson and Tatiana Guderzo in the sprint to the line. Cooke was in a group of five that pulled away from the peloton in the 6km uphill climb to the finish. She clocked a time of three hours, 32 minutes and 24 seconds as is Britain's first Olympic medallist in this event. Fellow Brits Emma Pooley and Sharon Laws finished in 23rd and 35th respectively. Yay first gold, in what will likely be our strongest area- cycling.

Pakistan wont win a single medal (last time was a bronze in Hockey back in 1992) but the great reaction they got from the Chinese fans in the stadium during opening ceremony when they were announced brought a tear to my eye

second gold for britain in womens 400m freestyle and they also took bronze in that same race. China flying and looking good for the top of that medal table.

India win their first ever gold in single event , in 10m rifle event. The last gold medal was way back in 1980 in hockey.
