Unfortunately to have competitive sportsmen and women at this level these days you have to invest heavily in their development.
All our top competitors are funded through National Lottery money and we have brought in the best coaches.

we don't even have enough money to found the winter sports in italy cos the only sport who matter here is football and that show our lack of knowledge in sport thats why we always complain when we lost.
We have not a sports culture here.

Slightly off-tangent, but I liked this from Arse Wenger Arsene Wenger says he is surprised by Great Britain's gold rush at the Olympic Games. "I didn't know the English were good at swimming," said the Arsenal manager. "I have been in this country for 12 years and I haven't seen a swimming pool." Where are the French on the Medals table Arsene? Behind the mighty Team GB I reckon. If Team GB can find some decent track & field athletes between now and 2012, then the London Olympics will be an epic.

Its cos Berlusconi has taken all the money for himself this is one of the main reasons!!!! lol Italy is only able to give money to Football but when other sports are not successful they blame on federations which is absurd!!!

I was watching Channel 4 and they had a round up of the mornings events and then an Interview with Michael Phelps. He was asked what he was looking forward to about coming to London and he said watching a Man UTD game at OT. He said he's been told by everyone that he HAS to go and watch "Man yoo" and that the stadium is unbelievable.
Then the correspondent said, "There's no accounting for taste" What a cheeky wanker!

its been a sucessful olympics, in my opinion chris hoy and bradley wiggins should be fucking knighted unreal so they have been. Countries like australia invest loads of money into sports and for a nation of 20 million they do win a lot of medals, its a fact without big investment in alot of sports you can't expect to lift a lot of medals, china win nothing on the track or the pool but investment in minority sports like archery, table tennis and gymnastics they can build up a wealth of medals. Italy is a footballing nation but so is britain.

Go Team GB! We have already exceeded expectation; the team were set a target of 35 medals in total, including 12 golds. There are still few events where further medals can be won; therefore expect Team GB to amass a total in excess of 40 medals.
A great tonic for the 2012 games. Let's hope that this feable excuse for a Government invest in our current and future Olympic talent.
Apparently, our friends in the US display the Medal Table in a different format; their table is based upon total number of medals won. This puts them top!
