Barclays Premier Reserve League
Halliwell Jones Stadium, 12 March
LIVERPOOL 2
Degen 5, Pachuco 49
MANCHESTER UNITED 2
Welbeck 20, Fabio 36
Despite fine goals from Danny Welbeck and Fabio, United were held to a draw in a feisty local derby with Liverpool on Thursday evening.
The Reds conceded early goals in either half of a hard-fought encounter, missing out on the chance to move second behind runaway league leaders Sunderland.
The game began at a breathless pace, and United could have been ahead inside 15 seconds as Danny Drinkwater's cross was deflected onto Welbeck's chest, only for the ball to loop fractionally wide.
Less than five minutes had passed when the deadlock was broken in nightmare fashion for United. A lack of communication between goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak and Robbie Brady allowed Swiss international Philippe Degen to reach a long punt forward and roll into the empty goal.
That shocker aside, United's early play carried much promise, and the Reds drew level in delightful fashion. Matty James sent a sublime ball through for Welbeck, who took a touch before poking a classy finish over goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis.
Buoyed by the leveller, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side pushed for the lead. Drinkwater saw his shot touched wide by Bouzanis, but the Reds weren't to be denied and were ahead before the interval.
A neat, incisive passing move from the visitors culminated in the livewire Lee Martin feeding Fabio inside the Merseysiders' penalty area, and the Brazilian slotted the ball into the far corner of Bouzanis' goal with an ice-cool nonchalance.
All United's clear ascendancy was undone within four minutes of the restart, however, as Daniel Pacheco converted from 10 yards, via the inside of Kuszczak's near post.
The remainder of the second half was largely a war of attrition, as tempers flared and tackles flew in from two sides eager to take both bragging rights and points.
Both sides had chances to win it in the dying stages. Pacheco had Kuszczak scrambling with a curling free-kick which arced past the Pole's post, while Bouzanis made a tidy save from Oliver Norwood's last minute free-kick.
It ended honours even after a tasty, full-blooded 90 minutes in Warrington - a fitting scene-setter for Saturday's senior encounter at Old Trafford.
United: Kuszczak; Eckersley, De Laet, C Evans, Fabio (Norwood 66); Martin, Possebon, James, Drinkwater, Brady (Derbyshire 83); Welbeck.
Subs not used: Woods, Gill, Bryan.
Fabio's quite a goal-scorer...for a left-back. But he's always had that reputation. It's not just penalties either!
