Ps: anyone says Dubois quit with a broken eye socket can fuck off. Some things are bigger than winning a fight and thinking that winning a fight is bigger and better the long term health is the reason why boxing is losing mainstream acceptablitly
Sadly just like anything else the media built British athletes up only to knock them down harder. AJ had it after his loss, Dubois will have it now. Pathetic really.
The Bruno vs Tyson documentary on Sky was really good.
My partner is a few years younger than me, not much but enough to where she can’t remember Bruno fighting. I was trying to explain to her just how famous Bruno was when I was a kid. He was really beloved. Can’t imagine many fighters getting an open top bus parade now.

At one point, I genuinely think Bruno was probably the most famous man on Britain. I vividly recall his world title win. We were the only people in our family at the time who had Sky Sports. A living room full of Grandparents, uncles and cousins. When he won on points my grandad popped open 3 bottles of champagne. Genuinely, one of my fondest moments of my life.

Kevin MacDonald is an outstanding director and he really delivered on this. I found the scenes at the end when they met up quite sad. They’re both in pieces from the way their lives have played out and you can see the devastation boxing has taken on them physically. I know Tyson speaks about being a different person now but you can see the demons in his eyes and you wouldn’t be shocked if he goes off the rails yet again.

Thinking about that gives me goosebumps. Nobody in my life was even into boxing.

He was genuinely a household name. And he came up during a time where boxing was completely accessible to the public, until eventually as you say his fights would’ve been on Sky. My memories of his world title win are very similar to yours. Mentioned in another thread that my Grandad was a former boxer so he wasn’t going to miss something like that. He was the only one with Sky and he had it purely for the boxing. Everyone was round there for it.
The clips of Bruno with Barrymore and on Noel’s House Party show how he’d transcended the sport. You were fucking nobody unless you’d been to Crinkley Bottom. And every man in my family had an impression of him up their sleeves too.
I felt the same was as Stew about the footage of him and Mike together. The toll that sport has taken on both of them is so evident. Fighters struggle so much with their life after. They’re often unable to manage their money too having frequently come from underprivileged backgrounds. Tyson had that exhibition recently, but I remember reading a couple of year ago about Bruno trying to get cleared to box again. Looking at him on that doc and with all the other issues surrounding him health wise, physical and mental, it’s no surprise he wasn’t successful.

There was a great documentary from ESPN a few years ago called “Broke” which delved into the incredibly large % of athletes who go broke within a few years of quitting sport. It mainly focussed on American footballers and basketball players but it’s worth a look.

Funnily, was watching one of those Chiropractor ASMR vids with Shannon Briggs once, and the chiro doing his adjusting was interviewing him in-between ‘cracks’. Basically, Briggs hired an outsider as a financial consultant when he went pro, on the off chance he made any money. Years later, he’s a multi-millionaire outside of boxing. It’s mad to think only he, Lewis, Holyfield and Foreman are probably set for life from that generation, and Foreman only for putting his name on a grill.
