Felipe Massa's condition has been described as "serious but stable" following emergency surgery after he suffered skull damage and concussion.
The Brazilian hit a tyre wall after a spring from Rubens Barrichello's car flew up and hit Massa's helmet during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
The Associated Press news agency quoted a hospital spokesman as saying Massa's condition was "life-threatening".

I watched this earlier and had no idea how bad it was. The commentators were so lax about it, that I assumed it was nothing until later when I heard it on Talksport. It was weird, cos Barrichello got interviewed before it happened and was adamant something had come off the rear of his car, but what he was saying was more or less dismissed as an excuse. Next thing it smacked Massa on the bonce.

The commentators were also saying that he was fine, before they even knew themselves, and the coverage ended with us being none the wiser.
"He's lifting his arm up, so he's ok".
Yeah tell that to his smashed up head you mugs. How did that cretin get from kids TV, to Football Focus, all the way to hosting the F1 coverage. Odious little shit.

That could have been a lot worse, as was shown with the death of Henry Surtees the week before. Hope Massa makes a speedy recovery.

Quite sickening to watch, i hope he recovers soon. Probably would have been a dead racer 4+ years ago without the carbon reinforced helmets.

Apparently he's getting better but the doctor who operated on him has said that he won't race again this season.

He's lost some of the sight in his left eye apparently. Could be a premature end to his career. Thats what the reports are saying anyway.

Now he is better. He can passively communicate.

His sights fine apparently and he might leave hospital in about a week. Glad it's looking ok for him.

What a replacement to have. Michael Schumacher will make a shock return to Formula 1 to replace injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. The seven-time world champion, 40, retired at the end of 2006 but has agreed to drive at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 23 August. Schumacher will stand in for Massa, who fractured his skull at the Hungarian GP, for as long as he is sidelined. news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8172310.stm
