The minor slave trade comment is unfortunate because it's what people latch on to. Of course it's salacious and overly sensationalized and it completely detracts from any argument he was trying to make.
His point is a valid one though. I don't agree with our signing all these 15/16 year old kids because our laws say we can when others can't. Legal yes, ethical no. Instead of filling our youth systems with foreign kids because we can exploit loopholes in the regulations we should be developing young British talent instead of selling our local kids on for 2-3 million and replacing them with 16 year olds from here there and everywhere.

But you see mate we are very limited when it comes to getting young british talent. What is the rule. Clubs cannot sign players outside a 90 mile radius of their home ground or something. And the fact is the players we sell on are simply not United standard. They are given a chance but the fact is they don't cut the mustard. Perfect example, I thought the lad David Jones was going to be a midfield general for us, awesome in reserves and when he went to NEC on loan. But there is a big step up from Dutch Football and Reserve football to stepping into the first team of a club whos challenging year in and out for domestic and european honours... Granted his first team chances were limited, but he could have made the break through when we badly needed central midfielders, Keano gone, Scholesy out with the eye complaint, Smudger broken leg.. leaving O'Shea and Giggsy. This is the opportunities the gaffer talks about for young players and they have to step up to mark if they want to make a successful career at united. It takes hard work and dedication and I think the modern day young english footballer is more interested in getting in tabloid papers, buying jewellry, buying big cars, seeing how many birds he can shag as opposed to forging a career at the very top of the game, compare that to his african/brazilian/european counterparts, who are more often than not exampliary in their professionalism and attitude. You wouldnt think the Da Silva lads were 5 years younger than that muppet Kieran Richardson would ya..

to be honest i'd rather we sign the young british talent but the silly travel law is preventing that so we go elsewhere. its not ideal but such is life

Yet another young foriegn kid on our books. Surely we can uncover an English talent somewhere within a 90 mile radius! Even Villa have stumped up the cash for Fabien Delph today (not saying we should have). The lack of English talent is quite alarming. Are our scouts working in England not doing there jobs or is there really a lack of good talent?

It's probably that we identify good young talents in England, but due to the ridiculous catchment restrictions, we aren't allowed to sign them. They sign for a club with inferior youth development and the talent just drifts listlessly into mediocrity.

Nice to see people agreeing with me on the British kids thing. I usually get piled on for making those comments.
Unless the FA are finally going to build this National Academy thing we need our kids at the best clubs with the best facilities and the best coaches playing against the best of their peers. That isn't happening if we're restricted to the 90 mile catchment area. I don't know if there's a similar rule in Spain or Italy or Germany, I would suspect not, but it needs to change, along with the age rules allowing teams to nick players like Macheda/Fabregas etc. At this rate, maybe 6+5 isn't such a bad idea after all.
I almost included Fabian Delph in my first post but decided that people would just get distracted and respond with their opinions on him and how he's ex-Leeds and we're better than that..blah blah. I think we should've signed him, I think we should've made some sort of bid for Daniel Sturridge too, but too late for that.
Coogie...I agree that there's something wrong with the psyche of young English players who have a bit of success and start acting like they're kings of the world. I believe more of them should go abroad and learn different styles of football. Case in point Owen Hargreaves. Probably the most versatile English player, if fit, learned it all at Bayern. Perhaps if you've spent your whole development at a small time club and suddenly move to a United or a Chelsea and play in the reserves you feel like you've made it and start the big time charlie stuff. I don't have all the answers, and I take your point about the lack of hard work/ambition but I don't think we can stop scouting our own kids because of it. I would still rather bring in a bunch of British 15/16 year olds than foreign kids is all.

Mate of mine is a big Leeds fan and he reckons Delph isn't worth £6 million plus add-ons, but has bag loads of potential if he can sort out a number of fairly major flaws in his games. Disappointed we didn't even appear to have a look.

Disappointed we didn't even appear to have a look. www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/article1222042.ece?startindex=-1Any time the smaller clubs get a whiff of United coming their prices inflate just like the media's talk of the player in question. Remember about Delph being the next Frank "less tubby" Lampard or Steven, "Get drunk, start a fight, go to court, and bugger Benitez", Gerrard. The offer was quality but Mr Bates in trying to screw us, screwed the lad and his own pocket instead. United have a history of securing, developing, and giving first team opportunities to new British talent, and he could've done well under Ole. But Fergie aint getting ripped off by no one, (especially some sheep-shagging, Santa Claus look-a-like.)

So, at least it means we can now sign a player we'll never hear of again. And we will play against when he ends up at Sunderland or Hull.
