totally agree, people see a possession based game and assume its total football. Total football is a loaded term, yes it was about dominating the ball but never for the sake of it. Barcelona do not play total football, never have. If you read the book Brillant Orange, you will get a better idea of what the dutch meant by total football. Funny you should say that ... I have! It's probably why I get so annoyed at all this Barca = 'total football' nonsense. Half an iota of research into it would prove that their style is absolutely no total football. Some interesting stuff in it about van Gaal too actually, given that I decided to re-read it when all the talk was of LVG's imminent appointment. Really divides opinion. LVG definitely divides opinions in his home country. The vast majority of dutch people thing he's arrogant and dictorial but they respect his achievements in the game. I always knew that total football was about interchanging positions, everyone was comfortable on the ball, centre halfs had the technique to play in full back positions or in midfield, but its alot more than just that obviously. The high pressing game, quick transitions from defending to counter attacking. Everything was done at lightening speed. No one plays totabl football now, everyone is football is a specialist these days. In midfield your either a holding player, number 10 or box to box player. The game today is all about specialisation.

Ronaldinho should be considered one of the top 5 footballers of all-time in my opinion. Not signing him is one of the biggest mistakes that we've made as a club.

Can't argue that he's not one of the most likeable players ever to have graced the pitch - he plays because he loves it, unlike Failotelli who plays for reasons only known to him

Ronaldinho for me was the only freestyle footballer that truly made it to the top of the game without having to completely change his game. He will always be a genius in my eyes but like alot of Brazilians once they get there they can't be arsed staying there.

I'm not sure Ronaldinho would have thrived in the PL Cold wet evening in stoke? Yeah, but als in terms of the thuggery type players we have in the PL that would have just upended him once or twice a game, pretty sure some players enjoy the space and freedom of alternative leagues in Europe.
