www.goal.com/en-us/news/67/world-cup/2010/05/12/1921598/world-cup-2010-the-23-man-rejects-squadPlayers not going to South Africa Goalkeepers (3) Sebastien Frey (France) Diego Alves (Brazil) Marco Storari (Italy) Defenders (6) Javier Zanetti (Argentina) Philippe Mexes (France) Alex (Brazil) Ezequiel Garay (Argentina) Sol Campbell (England) Marcelo (Brazil) Midfielders (8) Jeremy Menez (France) Samir Nasri (France) Esteban Cambiasso (Argentina) Juan Riquelme (Argentina) Ever Banega (Argentina) Ronaldinho (Brazil) Diego (Brazil) Guti (Spain) Forwards (6) Karim Benzema (France) Kevin Kuranyi (Germany) Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Netherlands) Francesco Totti (Italy) Antonio Cassano (Italy) Pato (Brazil) Stand-By (5) Fabrizio Miccoli (Italy) Pedro Leon (Spain) Patrick Vieira (France) Aly Cissokho (France) Owen Hargreaves (England) As a general fan of world football I wanted to see most of these players in South Africa and looking at those chosen ahead of them I feel the tournament might be poorer for not having them. Thoughts?

Cambiasso not going blows my mind. He's still one of the most composed players I've seen in the middle of the park. Like and Argentine Paul Scholes. Sol Campbell isn't exactly a big miss though, is he?

pato makes sense though, the guys barely played all season and has had recurring hamstring injuries.

Should be a good tourney, the qualifiers were quite tight in some cases with Portugal and Argentine taking it to the wire to qualify, we nearly had no Messi or Ronaldo et al. There a few big names not going but it doesnt mean we'll be any worse of for it.

This could be for the better, there seems to be a lot of young unknown players whom have been brought. Maybe these will spring surprises and entertain us .

I think it would be a really good world cup, probabaly one of the best (gut feeling plus plenty of top players coming into their own),but having said that, I'm more anxious and excited about the premier league kicking off in August..

It is ridiculous that Cassano is not going, he is a fantastic player and has been one of the best players in Serie A this season. The only reason he is not going is because the manager does not like him on a personal level, I think the fortunes of your country at the world cup should come ahead of a personality clash but thats my opinion. The fact that even Miccoli is on stand-by ahead of Cassano is a joke to be honest..

It is a shame that most of the aforementioned players are not going, but isn't that what World Cups are about? Someone out there, with a football shirt on actually making a name for himself. Let us hope that he wears the red of Manchester United too.

Don't care who just misses the cut for the competition. It will be a great World cup because its football every day! No boring summer without football and plenty of pub time. Great stuff!

after watching the power of the game documentary on more4 last night I really hope its a success for South Africa and that Africa as a continent enjoys the success that Japan and South Korea gave to Asia in 2002. But I can't stop thinking about those great players that aren't going especially now when you can add Michael Essien to that equation. Certain big nations like Italy, Argentina and France may regret leaving out those aforementioned players if they struggle because most of their replacements don't seem to be as good on paper I also wonder if the quality of the world cup depends on Brazil. The most memorable World Cups have seen Brazil at their best and therefore its important that the Samba Boys hit the ground running early in the tournament so neutrals are yawning and moaning.
I think I am guilty of playing too much pro evo and fifa, hoping life will imitate art and that we'll see lots of goals and great skills, just like any kid that will be tuning in. Anyway here's wishing South Africa much success and hoping our club's players come back lauded not lambasted

Brazil aren't happy with Dunga because he's dropped their yoga bonito/samba style so don't expect to see to much of it, of course he will be a hero if they win it. Apparently it was a big factor in leaving Ronaldinho out.

Can't really argue about the players left out, most have been patchy this season.
And everyone knows that Cassano is a knob, why should he represent his country. Terry is one of the best CBs in the country, but I'd love Capello to tell him to fuck off because he's a slimy little shit.
Perhaps the Ronaldinho and Riquelme of four years ago would be missed, but not the current versions.
