Late '80s/early '90s Hogan really is the prototype Most Hated Cena when it comes to PPVs and bullshit wins FFS. Also, you tell me you can listen to Bob Caudle talk about guys getting pounded by two or three men in the WarGames without smirking like an 11 year old and I call shenanigans. Had this chat with a mate the other night. Hogan was the consummate live crowd worker. Re-watch those matches. He works the arena crowd and couldn’t care less about tv/ppv viewers. He charges tact during his NWO run and became self-indulgent, but still, a tip top worker. Also, most recent DSoTR about Grizzly Smith is brilliant yet harrowing viewing if you know nothing about him. After I go and say that then he drops the belt clean to Ultimate Warrior at 'Mania VI. What a man.

The other thing that's noticeable about that period is how good Hogan was at getting new guys over. Either as a face or heel, Hogan brought the fans to wherever the company wanted them.

Ultimate worker. Exactly. When you stop and think about it it's like, 'How the hell did he do that?' Loses the main event of the biggest PPV of the year, dropping the belt, completely clean, and he still leaves as the hottest guy in the building. That's actual genius at work.

Kevin Nash as Oz gimmick ... Woof! It’s a big ol piece of wrestlecrap, but he leans into it now. I love Nash. Saw a way to make a ton of money doing the Hogan gimmick.

It is so obvious that the booking has changed in WCW and Herd wanted more of a WWF cartoon-y vibe. Rap Master PN News anyone? Yuck. I'm torn on Nash. I love some of his work but he seems like a fucking asshole. Bischoff has admitted Nash deliberately buried Bret in WCW when they needed a proper new storyline beyond the nWo.

Another round of good people losing their jobs. There’s been some fucking shit days in the rasslin’ business recently.

I'm starting to believe that Vince might actually be looking to sell given the large number at a time of record profitability. Feels like he is making the asset as lean as possible.

I don't understand what WCW were trying to do with putting on random gimmick Starrcades. To an extent I appreciate the effort to do something different but why at your biggest event of the calender?
Also think watching both companies in chronological order highlights little differences that shows the gap between the two. The PPV rings and entrances are still generic for WCW and bespoke to the PPV in the Fed, for example.
WWF completely wasted Flair's jump by the way. Such a disappointment.

WCW was brilliant until Sept 98, when it got silly. On an aside, if you put 98 Steiner persona, into 92 Steiner body, then you’d have the genuine natura successor to Hogan

I don’t think WCW understood what they were trying to do either mate. I should clarify I'm talking about pre-Monday Night Wars here. '88-'91 (so far). WWF knows exactly what they are. WCW have gone from a 'true' pro wrestling expanded-territory style outfit to a strange halfway house of down to earth wrestling in the same show as Big Josh and Big Gay Marc Mero. It's just a bit weird.

They're just so vanilla. Particularly knowing what Scott Steiner I have to look forward to. Watching Bret's rise in 'real time' is pretty special.

Go back, man was special, if he came around now, he’d be a superstar ready for a Marvel franchise
