That's a fair point about Glenn, he has lost that quirky, cheeky edge to him and instead they've gone down the "lonely loner" route. They could have easily combined the two really.
I guess they are trying to flesh out the characters more but I feel they could do that a lot better by giving them some background, although I wouldn't want it to go as far as a show like House for example, where everyone has this hugely in-depth psyche profile and every character has "issues". I did have that uneasy feeling with T-Dog too but put that down to his delirium from his septic wound, although were the things he said what he's hiding normally? That's something that could be interesting.
Excellent point about the chopping between scenes. It's something my housemate and I both noticed when watching the most recent episode; it just constantly flicks between the characters to show they're doing something and not much else. The only time there was some suspense was when Daryl was exploring that house, but that was quickly dashed, same goes for Shane and Otis' visit to the school... it's just not built up enough and when there is some suspense, it isn't sustained for long. I think they're going too heavily on the emotional drama at the expense of the horror/suspense/action side of things.
I suppose in fairness they do have 13 episodes to play with this time, rather than 6, so there's more scope to stretch things out. They could be using that to focus on a different character in each episode though, rather than trying to cram everyone in. It's something that was done incredibly well in the HBO series Band of Brothers, to the point where toward the end you really cared about each character, even though there were loads of them, and that was done in 13 episodes too, not to mention a single series (albeit with longer individual episodes).
Yeah I reckon we'll see Merle again sometime soon, should be interesting to see what the dynamic between him and Daryl will be.
