yes i do cos while pat hasn't been hitting the high notes of 2 and 3 years ago he's a proper full-back and i wouldn't say anyone who has played at RB this season has showed him up. although there is a degree of evra-hating on this forum so i don't expect many to agree. you say the twins are the future then claim we have no cover at LB, where Fabio could be a cracking player. so presumably long-term we'll be alright, and you are talking about cover for Evra now. well how many fit RB's do we have in the short term? if smalling the center half gets hurt or has to play in the middle (replacing rio which is ever likely) we will end up playing valencia the winger in there. so which is the more urgent position i ask you?!! we can go back and forth but i think it makes more sense to buy a RB. There is no 'evra-hating'. Unless by 'hating' you some how mean those that are free to say he's been playing poorly when... he's been playing poorly. As already stated he was poor pretty much ALL of last year. Previously being the best LB around in past years does not make him immune to any form of criticism, especially when his form is being measured over many months and not any type of knee jerk. His defensive positional sense disappeared last season, improved again this season but still usually switches off at least once per game. Please though don't call it hating, its seem dismissive and unfair. I'm not calling for his head on a chopping block, just saying he's not as solid as he once was. Who knows, maybe if he didn't start 95% of our games each year he be better rested and better performing. Maybe. About fit RB's, Rafael is back and was on the bench on Wednesday. That somewhat undermines your 'short term' comment, are you suggesting we sign some championship lad just because we have a couple of players are injured close to (already) returning. Our transfer shouldn't be dictated by short term. Do we even have any evidence he'd even be better than Valencia at right back? unlike Evra at least that's a defender with end product. Valencia certainly isn't a natural defender, but him and Nani in combo are pretty good as flat track bullies. anyway, enough of something I said was a low priority to begin with We're going in circles. About Jones though, the lads got so much ability I wouldn't write him into any position as of yet. i call it Evra hating because much of it was harsh and OTT and i got the impression people followed it sheep-like without being convinced themselves. as for the palace right back i've barely seen any of him and i'm not suggesting we sign him, the essence of my point is that i want a full-time, first choice right sided full back like we have on the left instead of rotating players in the position. you talk about rafael coming back to fitness and if he's the answer then great but we'l have to see cos he hasn't been that player so far apart from in spells.

I have been a big critic of Evra this season Jimbonda, and I don't think it's fair for you to dismiss my criticism as simple ignorance. I have been disappointed with how poor some of his defending has been. Going forward, he's still as good as he has been, but his primary responsibility is defence, and he has been caught out of position or bypassed too easily far too often this season. We're right to expect better of a genuinely top class left back.
No, nobody that has played right back has been superior, but that's not a valid excuse. If anything, because our right backs have been mostly centre backs or Valencia, Evra is under more pressure to lead by example and be solid and dependable.

i've got no problem with criticism where it's due but i've seen some proper school-boy shit written about Evra.
And a number of other players for that matter who i've seen go from hero to zero in six months or less.
The right back topic isn't in defence of Evra. it is a seperate point all together. I just used Evra to illustrate the point of a full-back who plays when fit, which i think we also could do with on the right, although it's probably down the list of priorities at the minute.

Manchester United are confident they will land Crystal Palace's Nathaniel Clyne and could make a three-million-pound bid this month. The England under-21 international is out of contract at the end of the season and Palace have been unable to tie him down to a long-term deal amid interest from a host of clubs including Newcastle, Fulham and Everton. According to Goal.com, United have jumped to the front of the queue and could seal a move for the 20-year-old this month to secure one of the brightest emerging talents in English football. United are one of a number of clubs considering an official bid before Palace play the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final against Cardiff City next week - but they believe the player already has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford. Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted this week that the Londoners are resigned to losing Clyne and suggested the player's agent has already made contact with Premier League clubs. "Nathaniel won't sign a new contract," Parish told the London Evening Standard. "I have offered him a very lucrative one and I can't force him to accept it." "His agent has got Nathaniel running his contract down - make your own mind up about what's happening." United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to have been impressed by Clyne's display in Palace's shock win at Old Trafford in the Carling Cup quarter-final in November. Injuries to Rafael have meant that Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have had to fill in at right-back, and Clyne is seen as a long-term option to compete for the position. If Clyne leaves Selhurst Park in the summer, the Eagles will be set to receive a compensation package as the player is under 24 and has come up through the club's youth system. Rather than risk letting the fee be decided by tribunal in the summer, Palace will be tempted to cash-in this month on an offer in the region of three million pounds for the Academy product. Clyne has already made 121 appearances for Palace and was voted as the club's player of the year for 2011, while he has played a key role this season as Dougie Freedman's side eye a place in the Championship playoffs. www.soccerway.com/news/2012/January/19/united-lead-race-for-palace-starlet-clyne/

My mate works for Palace and SAF was told by Lennie Lawrence that he's not top 4 quality, at the moment.
Having said that he's just told me that a deal could be done now, agents pushing really hard to get him out and they believe he could be Englands future RB.
We'll see, I'll be surprised if we do business in Jan for him.

every report i have seen says he is the business, really solid going forwards and back. at that price we cant go wrong 2 million would be great. he is very level headed, hardworker, if he can work half as hard as red nev then will be good business and competition for rafael

Is he the one that looked lively against us?
Anyway, £3 mill for a championship player with less that 6 months on his contract sounds a bit steep.

£3m for a potential right back that could play for us for a decade, a risk i would take

That's the complete opposite of what he's like at the moment. Doesn't have the right attitude at the minute and IF we did decide to sign him he'd need to curb his attitude.

On a plus with this if we do sign a right back that can stay fit then smalling wouldnt have to play at right back so much therefore jonesey could start playing in mid more often Result.

To be honest, I don't think we need a new right back at all. Have we all forgotten about the Da Silva's?
