A malicious intent to deliberately cause grievous harm should get a more serious ban i.e. 3 months or even the season. A lack of intent but serious injury should be at least half the ban of one that has intent IMO, since a lesson needs to be taught not to go in throwing dangerous tackles that could potentially end a fellow player's career. How do you prove intent? I guess this will have to be left to the discretion of an independent judging panel. The referee and his new backroom staff watching the game will make an immediate decision first, i.e. sending off the player. I guess you will ultimately have to depend on watching the replays over and over again after the match. The most obvious ones are looking to see if the attacker has his eyes on the ball at all or not, or looking to disturb the play by putting in a tackle - whether it was in the first place, logical to put in such a tackle. The least obvious ones will have unfortunately have to be dissected by the panel of judges. It can be difficult, like Gary said, many cases in football isn't black or white. But at least 1-3 months suspension for a mistimed, dangerous tackle (2 footed, studs up, etc.) What are your opinions on this SET?

Neville does make a persuasive argument. However, I cannot see what can be done to reverse the trend of diving except for retrospective punishment. Cheating and unsportsmanlike actions are cultural in the game now.

Cheating and unsportsmanlike actions are cultural in the game now. Its the only solution. You cant say to professional hey you stop that diving because it looks bad because he knows it works. On the other hand if he does it to get his team a final like the CL, banning him for that game might change his mind. I can't accept there is no solution to it, we are talking about diving and cheating here not dangerous tackles thats another topic.

Something needs to be done - and players missing games will ultimately hurt them and the clubs (im pretty sure ive advocated retrospective banning on here for similar offences in the past) - you have a club who has a player who is known for diving, etc and suddenly those in charge are able to punish them if the ref doesnt, the manager is (or should if he is smart) look at it all, pull the player aside and say "look, you face being banned if you dont stop it , and we cant afford to lose you for any games" - then the players will (eventually) stop it. The problem with it is how it gets policed and enforced. 1. Who sits on the panel? You will obv need ex-players and officials (but then fans will find cause to complain about whos appointed - no matter who is on the panel) theres no room for anyone who hasnt participated in the game really. 2. Does the proposal breach employment laws? You are technically - albeit temporarily - stopping them from working. Some player/club is bound to exploit that side of any ban. Least when (and its a big WHEN) the FA choose to enforce the laws/rules they have, clubs and players cant really go down a legal route. 3. It would have to be set down what it is punishing. While Young made the most of the challenge - it still was a penalty. It has been said before that if he hadnt gone down he probably wouldnt have got the penalty - which would have been wrong. So what he did was wrong, but it was done to make sure the CORRECT decision was arrived at and it would be unfair to treat players like that similar to blatent offenders. So do you give them a warning and a suspended 1 game ban on the proviso they dont do it again? Then if they do, then the suspended 1 game ban is added to any other punishment. This would all need to be set down and explained to the players and clubs. 4. The bans should increase for repeat offenders - 3 games for the first time, 6 for the 2nd, etc. I had more to add, but got distracted and have forgotton it.

I assuming that most of you are differentiating between "dives" in the box and elsewhere on the pitch, however, if everything is so black and white, you have to ban defenders who dive to get themselves out of a jam at the back. How many times will a centre back get themselves between the attacker and the ball and then just fall over? What about full backs going towards the touch line or the corner flag and then throwing themselves to the ground when the attacker gets close, usually with no contact? What about keepers who get bumped during corners and scream for free kicks? These are players standing still, waiting for someone to come close and then just chucking themselves to the floor, yet nothing ever gets said, and it happens multiple times each and every match. I'm assuming the pitchfork and torch wielding mob wants them done for 6 matches too?

It's great when fans are willing to say, "hey our players are diving and they need to stop that shit" because it shows class. We want to watch a good football match, not a football match won because a player cheated and the ref fell for it. Punishment for diving will be like goal line technology... Everybody is asking for it, it makes sense, but it will keep getting pushed off time and time again.

That Bale dive is absolutely shocking. Not only is he an absolutely mediocre player, but also a wank of a diver. Wouldn't want him anywhere near United.
