I just hoped that, considering how bad Nani's free kicks and corners were at the time when we bought Young, he'd be given more responsibility to take them. He's not particularly first choice for either.

Baines' upside is his set-piece ability, which we'll no doubt not take advantage of, because it's not the done thing at United... ? I'm fairly sure tats is referring to the fact we manage to either kill most players' ability to take a set-piece, or don't allow the one's who can take on to take one. Also the fact that good corners are not in our tactics book.

I actually get the feeling the near-post corner is coached into Nani and Young. Having looked at some of Nani's corners at the Euro's, I was surprised.
I agree with Tatty, I don't really think we have much aerial presence anymore especially when Vidic isn't playing.

Yes its a bit odd given our main strength is on the wings. While I didnt think he was great at the Euros you can certainly see a need for a Lewandowski in the squad.

Ha! Not really, sort of.
All I really know is, our set-piece deliveries are generally utter shite. We have players who have either been able to take good ones in the past, or before they came to United. Maybe they just seem good when they're not in a United shirt because we are so acutely aware of how bad ours actually are.

Our corners, at times, are absolutely atrocious. It should be relatively standard that we have someone who can deliver a decent ball into the box. Nani almost always hits the first defender, Giggs is even worse sometimes and, for some reason, Young hardly gets a chance to hit free kicks. I'm sure with a bit of work in that dept it'll go better but our set pieces really do need some work. Hence many people pointing out Leighton's strength in that dept. Young, I remember, was also deemed the savoir of our set pieces.

rooney takes a decent free kick, scored as many as most over the last couple of seasons, a decent free kick taker prob only scores 2 or 3 a season from prob 20 free kicks, and im sure if we do sign baines it wont just be because of his delivery or we would of had beckham back years ago.

After Becks and Ronnie were on automatic set-piece duty during their times, it looks like the same system is still in play.
If Nani takes a FK and fucks it up, he should go to the bottom of the list and another player should take the next one (even in the same game). If they fuck it up, Nani moves up a spot and that player goes to the bottom. And so on and so on, so that all those players who feel they are good at taking FK's, Corners, etc, get a turn. And the same player doesnt get to keep the job regardless of whether they actually do it well.
Rooney has scored a few crackers (Arse in the 8-2??), Youngs not bad, hell, even Giggs has scored a few in his day. Let Tony V try his hand, even Evra or Carrick could do well too.
It should be shared until someone proves they can hit a decent one 9 times outta 10. Most of the time we might as well save the wasted time and give the oppo a goal kick instead.

Its generally going to be a wide player or forward that takes them as the rest will have either defensive or offensive tactical instruction to follow out.But as SET says if they are consistantly screwing it up, as Giggs and Nani frequently do, others should have a turn.

the thing with beckham is he worked on his delivery obsessively. ronaldo also looks like he put in hours and hours perfecting his technique of hitting a ball. me personally, i won't hold it against a player if they put their energy into other areas of their game. however surely a professional footballer should rarely, if ever, fail to clear the first man with a corner! i see young do this and nani and whoever too often and i don't understand it at all, but the responsibility is with the player himself.
rooney hits a decent free kick as has been said a couple of times. he'd be my preferred free kick taker for the forseeable

Rooney has a decent curler and i think he worked on his FK's when Ronaldo was with us , you know, sort of to be the " top Cat" and it shows. With Nani and Young its more like complacency that they have it and can do it which usually ends with them screwing it
