I got the impression most thought the ceremony was good but that some parts of it were not understood - those relating to British history and identity such as the NHS. Apparently many Americans confused Brunel as Abraham Lincoln (the film on how America kick-started the Industrial Revolution is currently in pre-production) and couldn't understand why we would dedicate so much to one of the things we are so proud of and rightly so - the NHS. Aye. People who are not exposed to British history, culture or modern British livelihood will definitely find many parts weird or consider the ceremony poor. Heard from a few people halfway across the globe back in Asia they had no idea what was going on - some bewildered at the Industrial revolution part or at the dancing montage. Many just think Britain is a country full of Gentlemen and Ladies, Oxford, Cambridge Universities. Big Ben and the countryside. Funnily, most people whom I spoke with, understood the concept of NHS (and the Welfare system) though. Hence I thought even though the ceremony was beautifully British and warm, it might serve as a bewildering culture shock to some / people overseas. I thought the opening ceremony was fine. The "It was shit" bregade are the people who claim anything and everything is shit, just to get attention. The Aussie press have asked the serious question of whether it was the best opening ceremony ever, and they love to knock the Poms for anything. And as for people in Asia or wherever maybe not really getting it? Tough ain't it. It's Englands Olympics this time, the opening ceremony is supposed to be about the country hosting it, there was a load of the last one that had me thinking "What the fuck" because it was all about Chinese culture, as it should have been. This one was about our culture, the next will be Brazilian.

Craziest shit just happened in the fencing, clock was on 1 second for 4 restarts and the German fencer scored a super controversial winner out of no-where in that second (one of the 4 restarts for that second), snatching victory. Intense!

Just watched some of the male team gymnastics, we got bronze (eventually) which is pretty historic. Just a shame how it happened was so anticlimatic, Japan appealed something at the end and went from 4th to second, we would have had silver. Still boys done good.

Aye watching the swimming now, fair play to the gymnasts as well great achievement. Aye the japanese appealed, they probably deserved it in the long run but still cant take it away from the boys as nobody expected them to get anywhere near.

Yeh they did, just an error on the part of judges. Was just a bit gutting as for a few mins everyone thought GB had silver. Bronze was still superb, we haven't got a medal in it for a century or something, beating typical powerhouses like Russia and USA. A genuine success story.
