There's a difference between having had a defensive midfielder and having deployed a player specifically as a defensive midfielder, in terms of the latter the Gaffer is spot on. So when Neville and O'Shea played there they played there because of their ________? Answers on a postcard, please note that defensive skills is the incorrect answer so it must be one of the following: 1 - Their attacking goalscoring prowess 2 - Their defense splitting passes 3 - Their running with the ball 4 - Their, Christ knows, I give up. That's exactly what I mean though, deploying a defensively sound player, specializing in a position other than midfield (the exception being Butt probably), in midfield when it's required or when needed hardly qualifies as having an out and out defensive midfielder? As was mentioned, looking at where those players generally play, they weren't even genuine midfielders to begin with.

If we end up signing nobody which will probably be the situation come September, I wouldn't mind seeing Jones in midfield alongside Carrick (maybe a bit deeper). Gets up and down effectively, gets stuck in and he isn't bad on the ball either. I think its his best position, though he could do with working on his first touch, the second is usually a tackle when he plays in CM.

This looks like it could be a goer, if, as expected, Redknapp gets the boot/quits Spurs in the near future.

I think with the whole Redknapp situation and the lack of CL football this will be the best chance we have of signing him. Croatia will probably get knocked out after the group stage so we need to act ASAP and get things wrapped up if we do have genuine interest.

You know something we don't tatty?? Nope. Just surprised no one else has mentioned the Redknapp situation yet.Another year on, another season not in the European Cup, another year less of his contract, and questions over Redknapp's future. They have reasons. 'Scuse me?! Someone hasn't been reading the whole thread. On the DM/CM/AM debate - I think what I really want is a dedicated central midfielder, not a deep lying anything or and attacking anything. An actual central midfielder who play on the halfway line. Can help out going forward by making sure the ball gets to our flair/creative players, and can legitimately make a tackle when we don't have the ball. (NO, THAT DOESN'T DESCRIBE PARK, for whomever said that earlier.) As for Modric, this could pick up steam if Molten Face leaves Spurs. And like i said on Bale as well, it would be a big move for us in terms of reputational impact. We could get a bit of genuine fear-factor about us again. Teams wouldn't just think they could maybe get something by coming at us and having a go. I know we all complained when teams set-up with 2 banks of four, a 1 and a 1, but we lost less games when they did. We were usually good enough to break them down and win matches. It'd be nice to get back to that, and having teams shit themseleves instead of steeling themselves to fight us.

Reckon there's one more big signing coming in, no idea who that'll be though.
Ideally, one of Martinez/Modric/Strootman if there happened to be 30million lying around in a brown envelope on Gill's desk marked "Muney 4 Hazerd, luv Malcom".

Park can't tackle besto? behave yourself. but yes you have described the player we need. a proper central midfielder who can defend outside our box and also gets up. a box to box player and a perfect partner for carrick. we don't know much about strootman but if he's good and he is this player then lets get him

I didn't say Park couldn't tackle, I was saying he isn't that player. Someone basically suggested that everything I said there was a description of Park earlier. Which it is not at all. Wee Son buys into the whole 'closing near but not actually tackling the player' philosophy rubbish even if he has the ability to tackle in theory.
Glad to see someone getting where I'm coming from about the type of player though. I think some people have gotten stuck over the idea that keeping possession will solve our problems in protecting the back four. That won't work when we don't have possession to begin with.

I think Jones did well in there earlier in the season when he played alongside Carrick. I think he's worth a shout there espically as there is going to be a log jam at Centre Half half if Vida regains fitness. He's still young enough to be moulded into a defensive mid and then could drop back when Rio and the Serb ride off into the distance.
This is if we don't sign another player obviously.
