I have mixed feelings about wanyama. How many players from SPL have become good enough to play a starring role in our midfield??? I think Wanyama is either going to be an expensive mistake or a world beater. Which one I am undecided. Havent seen enough of strootman and Fellaini just doesnt fit in my opinion.
Surely there is a south american hatchet man out there somewhere that can play ball??? I have no idea what players are in the south american leagues but maybe this could be a source for us.

However we cant spend 15 million on a player on the back of 2 performances(barca home and away). Any rave reviews he gets in the SPL can be discounted out of hand because the SPL is only at a slightier higher standard than what we have here in ireland.

We can't but still, it says a lot about the player. To be able to perform at such a level against the best in the world at 21 isn't just a fluke to do it in two successive games. He obviously has some quality and I see no reason why we couldn't turn him into a fantastic player.

Ferguson himself has said we won't have a destroyer type, and I for one definitely don't want one either. We're not the type of club to just play a marginally-talented spoiler just because he can snap into tackles. I prefer us to have footballers who can do the nasty work. Out of curiosity then, who would be your ideal signing and what midfield would we then play? When you say a destroyer, do you mean something different to a DM? If we are going to play a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, we have to use a DM. It will not work any other way, Carrick tries to play this but with his lack of mobility and Scholes as a partner it just doesn't work effectively. Every single team that plays 4-2-3-1 effectively uses and out and out holding midfielder including Dortmund. Like wwyi99, I would have taken the hell out of Javi Martinez. As is, Khedira maybe? If we changed our mentality, I think we could actually get away without signing a midfielder. Like I said, Fletcher or Jones can play in that role when we need it, but I still like 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 for us. Provided we play the right men in midfield, with running, energy, mobility, whatever you want to describe it as, I really don't see the need for a spoiler. Like I said, it's the mentality of the whole team that needs to change, not the personnel. We need a nasty streak. Maybe we need to buy a player with that instilled. De Rossi would be my vote, if at all possible. A DM to me is a central midfielder who sits on the centre circle behind the halfway line who makes tackles and harasses oppo ball-players when we're out of possession, but can play when we do have it. e. g. Xabi Alonso. A destroyer is a Mascherano type, who sits right in front of the back four, and who's job it is to make tackles in front of the 18 yard box and takes zero interest in where the ball goes when we actually have it. A one dimensional player, doesn't use the ball for anything other than getting rid to actual footballers.

But Celtic set up with 11 men on their own 18 yard line in both matches which meant the spaces wanyamaa had to cover were not as great as they normally would. I think any of our midfileders would have excelled doing this job right on the edge of the box(except scholesy!!). I agrre that he did show some quality in possession.

Look back thru the thread man. ah kk missed it. i like kevin doyle. dunno why a prem side didn't come in for him I think he has lost his way a little. Injuries and constantly being in a relegation battling team where he plays up top on his own have not helped him.

Never understood how he managed to make it to a Premier League club. Should be crushing it in the Championship, but the Prem is a level above him.

He did make it to the PL so there are coaches more qualified than you and I that see something.

Yes, but Marcus Bent and Robbie Earnshaw have also turned out in the Prem. Coaches, even professional, Premier League coaches, can be wrong. If any other proof of that is needed, I offer you:
Bebe.

Bebe has scored more Champions League goals than Kevin Doyle.
