While I like the idea of getting the young players involved, teenage CMs are a damn rarity. Tunnicliffe isn't good enough unless something drastic happened in his loan and its too early for the others*. This is my point, we still need a squad for next year, if he still doesn't fit summer 2015 and we have a player to step up, then it becomes a good idea. At this very moment we have room for at least 1 CM, with Ando and Giggs gone, at least 2. Combine that with a LB, a CB and winger, I just dont see the resources to ditch and replace a 3rd CM for the sake of it. *Secretly I hope Pearson will emerge as Carrick replacement in time anyway. Carrick being another who is probably about to decline relatively soon.Pearson is a totally different player to Carrick. If anything, he could finally be the stand-in for the Keane/Butt role of actually tackling and dominating in midfield. Ok so who would be the Carrick replacement from the youngsters? Not Ekangamene - I don't think he is that kind of player - not Powell as he is more of an attacking mid. So Pereira? Petrucci (who apparently set up a nice goal last night for Cole in the U-21s)? Any other suggestions?

I don't know that we have a 'young Carrick'. All our youth are more mobile really. Pereira, though more of an attacking midfielder, is a lovely passer. Petrucci too, but the thing with his back has held him up. A bit of an odd shout but Barmby could probably be converted into that sort of a role, but again, he's so mobile and good going forward to have him sit like Carrick does would be a waste.
I don't think we need to worry about like-for-like replacing Carrick. Mobility and fluidity getting up and down the pitch box-to-box is going to come back into fashion and I'd love for us to be right at the front of it.

Pearson & Pereira look destined for the first team in the next few years.
Ekangamene has impressed me immensely over the last 6 months or so, he seemed pretty peripheral before then but seems to have upped his game. Versatile, strong and mobile.

I didn't really mean a like for like, just meant by the time Carrick needs replacing he'll be ready for the first team. We don't exactly need a 'type', Keane and Carrick were very different but ultimately both very successful. But after recent disappointments I refuse to get to excited over youth prospects. Oh, in that case Pearson is ready to step up and start the succession. All the lads mentioned are ready for a go in the first team in my view. And I have quiet hopes for Joe Rothwell somewhere down the line too.

I know we're on the wrong thread here but have you seen anything of Saidy Janko? He is apparently well regarded.

All I can say with any sort of authority is that we signed him from FC Zurich, he plays on the right, and he's a big black lad who doesn't look his age at all. He's seventeen/eighteen and honestly looks like he's in his twenties. EDIT: Oh, and from what I've noticed he is faaast!

Jesse scored in his first game back. Sunday anyone? It would be a dream....maybe instead of Valencia? Unfortunately it is a step too far for 'safety first' Dave.... A front line of Jesse--------Kags--------------Ladnan DW / Pea

No love for Tom Thorpe? Reckon he could be ready to step up next season. He's versatile, kinda like O'Shea, but a much better footballer, if we were to lose Rio and Vidic, I'd promote him and bring in another young prospect, Zouma for example, and play them in 'home bankers', Cup games and dead rubber CL games.

I like that Tatman.
RE: Thorpe, I like him. Strong, versatile as you say and he's got a good footballing brain, a leader on the pitch too from what I can tell.
Either way we're due a world class central defender either now or in the summer, the only question is who and how much they'll mug us off for him.
