The Grand National tomorrow. This is the only time (and the Derby) me and the wife have a small flutter on the horses. The wife is a dab hand at picking the winner and she will only go by the name of the horse and the jockey riding it. We normally ask our son for a tip as he use too be a bookie manager years ago at Ladbrokes or somewhere else, I can't remember. He still gets a few inside tips from his friends in the bookie's and said yesterday he fancies SHUTTHEFRONTDOOR. Looking at the odds today it was 6-1 at Ladbrokes but that could drift tomorrow down or up. The wife will put a quid on that for a win only (she never puts each way bets on). But I will back it at each way. Normally the wife and me put an outlay of 5 quid each on 5 horses at a pound. Will have to look tomorrow around lunchtime at the horses and odds then will whack them on as fixed odds. Think I will have a look at one around the 25/1 odds then have it as an each way bet.

Shutthefrontdoor is only that price because AP is on it and it will be his last national. He has said he will retire straight after the race if he wins. I have backed a fair few! Rainbow Hunter (e/w) Carlito Brigante (e/w) Spring Heeled Royale Knight (e/w) Pineau de re Soll (e/w) First Lieutenant (e/w) Owega Star Get on bet365. When you back a horse e/w, you get half your stake back, which is why i have so many.

First Lieutenant and Owega Star I am sure my son mentioned them yesterday when he was talking to the wife? I think I will back them 2 e/w. In fact I have a betting slip here now with SHUTTHEFRONTDOOR jotted down so the old pen is just about to write them down, cheers.

Thats me back from the bookies and put me and the wifes once a year flutter on the horses in the GR. Only £4 each on four horses. I done my normal 50p e/w bets and the wife changed tactics this year and put £1 each on two horses for a win and two horses 50p each way. She chose (all at fixed odds this morning at 10.30).
Unioniste 33/1 - e/w Soll 20/1 - e/w Shutthefrontdoor 7/1 - win only Ballycasey 33/1 - win only
I picked
Shutthefrontdoor 7/1 - e/w First Lieutenant 16/1 - e/w Owega Star 66/1 - e/w Cause Of Causes 14/1 - e/w
If she wins again this year I will stick my head down the pan and bloody flush it. She got a first in 2013 and the year before. I cant remember what horses they were but me and the son were still looking for our horses running. She only picks the horse by the name or what Jockey is riding it. Thats me skint now, £8 is a lot of dosh for old age pensioners.

Mind you she would be that happy she would buy me a bottle of wine or two. A few years back she won £68 on the GN. I got my wine and our son got a pack of lagers. We got fuck all on our horses but the wine and lagers eased the pain.

I haven't picked the winner since about 1971 Ex Girlfiend got Bindaree in the office sweepstake and I tried to get a bet on it at B365 online and the site froze so couldn't get the bet on I was actually managing a Ladbrokes shop the day of the void National - we had hundreds of grannies coming in all at once to get their 10p e/w bets back

If the wife picks a horse in the GN and asks me to put a bet on for her I will do so. I learnt a lesson in 1976 when we were living down south. The wife picked Rag Trade at 14/1 and told me to put a £1 on a win only. I kept saying to her "that won't bloody win, pick another one". But no, she was dogmatic that I had to put that bet on Rag Trade. So off I trotted to the bookies, and looked at the runners. Me being a smart arse prick and thought Rag Trade will not win it so I split her £1 up on 4 horses for a win at 25p each, a lot of money in them days. Never told her what I had done and just sat down with a big smile when I got home and started watching the GN. She was jumping up and down yelling "I WON, I WON.....". Bloody me was sitting there with my mouth wide open and saying to myself "fall you bastard FALL...." watching it win. Then she said to me "thats £15 I have won, is that right?". I coughed and said quietly what I had done. Never get on the wrong side of my wife as she has a right Scottish temper. So I learnt my lesson that day. If she picks a horse either in the GN or Derby I WILL put the bet on, come back with the betting slip and show her.

Still the good thing is no horses were injured and did not have to be destroyed. All well that ends well, it was only a flutter. Roll on the Derby and the next GN.

I was thinking about having a multiple on 3 or 5 of the teams in the CL tonight - any recommendations? Real-PSG draw could be good. As could Malmo to beat Shakhtar (probably an easy shakhtar win tho). Draws in both our groups games. Benfica & Atletico. Juve & citeh. After arsenal somehow winning last night who knows. Throw a couple quid on Malmo, Astana, Sevilla, Gladbach & us to win
