| FEATURESVIDEO **** 28/04/2016 09:32, Report by Adam Marshall. Video by Stephen Bibby VIDEO: SIR BOBBY'S FINAL UNITED APPEARANCE ****On this day (28 April) in 1973, footballing great Sir Bobby Charlton made his 758th and final appearance for Manchester United.
The Reds faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as Sir Bobby drew the curtain on his illustrious career in the final game of the 1972/73 season. United finished a disappointing 18th in the 22-team table but the 35-year-old was the club's top scorer in both Division One and all competitions. Chelsea chairman Ken Mears presented the England icon with a silver cigarette box before kick-off, which was perhaps the extent of the fanfare that marked the occasion, though both sets of supporters in a stadium under construction (the East Stand was being rebuilt) afforded the World Cup winner a warm ovation. Sir Bobby had some affection for the West London club because he had trained on his own at their ground a few times after playing for the national team at Wembley. Charlton captained the Reds in his farewell match - a 1-0 win for Chelsea courtesy of Peter Osgood's goal - and at the final whistle, there was great noise in tribute to the United legend with his name being chanted loudly. "I'd loved to have played for another 10 years but it's not possible, I know," said Sir Bobby. "I'll miss the playing side certainly, but not the training!" www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Features/2016/Apr/video-sir-bobby-charlton-final-appearance-for-united-in-1973.aspx ****

"I would love it" - Kevin Keegan, 1996
Newcastle led the Premier League by 12 points at one stage in the 1995-96 season but lost the title to Manchester United. As the Red Devils pulled their way back into the title hunt, Ferguson questioned how motivated the Magpies' opponents were. Keegan responded with this outburst on live television: "I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimations when he said that. We have not resorted to that. You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. "And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it." www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/32531969

Yeah one of my favourite goals as well. Remember it so clearly. I was at Uni in the student union watching it, trying to impress a girl and completely lost my shit when he scored. Never spoke to me again.

45 years ago, it was Sir Matt's last game in charge of United. 4-3 victory over City, 2 goals from Best, 1 from Charlton and Law each.
