Onana catches an insane amount of flak for a player who makes tha side. Also tied for 1st place in FPL GKs. The horror start he had still clouds some people I think. Case in point, the Liverpool cup game. He copped flak for all 3 goals which if you could actually remain fair about, were 2 deflections and a good save which fell kindly to Salah. He’s not Dave but then Dave wasn’t really Dave for a while either. That save for Salah's goal was unbelievable really, my wrist tendons snapped just watching it. I also though he was decent against City. Caught everything, and honestly thought that was the game plan. He catches set pieces, straight out to the fast lads up top.

And I think he went on to be, at his peak, the best 'keeper we have ever had. Onana is doing much better than before and still has a very high ceiling.
(I think Schmeichel was probably greater in terms of achievements etc., Stepney and VDS arguably ahead on that front too, but at his peak I think Dave was a better player than any of their United peaks.)

Errr lads, that’s the team of the calendar year 2024, not the whole 23-24 season.
Onana is still mostly terrible, for now.

Can't find it now, but there's also a table showing how many shots Onana has had to deal with - it's more than most GKs in the league by some distance due to the shambles that has been our defence (due to the consistent injuries this season).

Having a solid defence which doesn't change week in week out will be a huge benefit to onana too, he was brought in to play from the back and most of our defenders are pretty shit on the ball.

Jury is still out on Onana for me. Better than he was at the start but still not convinced. Too many goals go past him that I think top class keepers should do better with and he doesn't half fumble the ball a lot, rarely gathers it clean.
Will need a full season of largely good play to get me on side with how much that start scarred me.

We could have had Dave for another 12 months and spent the money elsewhere. I’m not even a big critic of Onana either fwiw.

Kudus is quality. Imagine deciding to blow 90mil on Antony and then West Ham go and get him for 40mil from the same club. Another bad indictment of ETH’s judgement.

Spurs 3-0 down. We’d be in pole position for 4th if we’d just held our leads in the past three games.
