Well, academies and centres of excellence improve quality for women players so why don't united reinstate their women's academy? The issue is why they closed it in the first place!

They closed it because interest in women's football is very, very low. So there isn't much money in it. Because women's football is SHIT.

You are going round in circles, as I am! Let's just agree that we are both right......

No. here is no circle. There is one end point. Women's football is SHIT. One of us is right.
The other reckons United should bring back a women's academy and team based on the fact the Glazers are from America and city have a women's team.

The lad has a point, although I'm not sure if he's a WUM or if he's 60+ years old.
I actually enjoy watching the Women's European Cup 2013 even though it may be scruffy at times, but it's developing in a good pace - and I'm glad to see that. Some of these players can do really good plays or tricks as well on the field. With the growth of intellectual women on the business, scientific and political scene - instead of only viewing women in a sexual light, I think it's also great to see women in an athletic role. If I had a daughter, I'd know who I'd rather her have as her role model (not that I'd encourage role models).
It's like saying we shouldn't invest in an academy to develop youth players, because in all fairness, have you seen kids U9-U11 play football? They're "shit". No one watches them, and hence no one should give them a toss. But that's not true. We develop them because there is an interest in Adult men's football. We're all commercial, we are all - to a certain extent - mercenaries. A lot of us "treat" our own players with disdain because they're "shit".
More back unto topic: I believe if there's enough interest, there will be funds. Business is Business. But Women's football isn't popular enough (as you can see from a few answers on this thread), therefore United doesn't have a Women's team. It's that easy and straight forward to understand.

Comparing grown women to children who haven't learned to play the game yet is laughable.

Comparing grown women to children who haven't learned to play the game yet is laughable. How is that "laughable"? The women's game is at it's infancy, growing albeit a slow pace. Interest is still low, and therefore, money pumped into them isn't great. Coaching staff would therefore not be as efficient as say, professional male football teams would get. This would, therefore, make the female's game less skillful - ergo, doesn't entertain us as much. The men's game, however is at it's apex. Billions pumped in after billions worldwide. There is a pressure for clubs to keep churning out talents - best to start them young, and pluck the rough gems. Male kids are scouted - kids aged 9-12, are getting more attention and money to develop than the women's game. Why? My point is always look to the future, and the overall betterment. We pump money into kids' academies not to be directly "entertained" by them, but it is to help some of them by offering them a chance to achieve their dreams and aspirations (or more likely to monopolise on their talent when they become pro-footballers). Females should be given the same chance and choice, if there is public interest (i.e. if there are enough women who have the desire to be footballers, as well as enough spectators). The comparison is not so far off. If you want something less "laughable", then I would say might as well disband anything lower than league two, well, because they are all "shit" in comparison to professionals.

There is a huge demand from girls to play football and there is an increasing number in FA centres of excellence and academies. Crowds are not big and the money going to players - even those in the women's superleague - is rubbish. Quality seems to be improving. One major difference - less simulation of injuries! Surely United can afford a women's academy! Across the Premier League - perhaps a 5% levy on all transfers to go to the women's game? ? If women's football is 'shit' so is a lot of men's football....

I think women's football has definitely grown significantly over the past few years and there are some fairly talented players involved, however overall the standard of play is still very poor. I do think that some of the players from the German international women's team, for example, could probably do well skill-wise in the men's game but of course the physical aspect then comes into question. However, for me, the worst part of women's football is the goalkeepers; they are truly atrocious.
For a club like United, with owners so obsessed with making money and cutting costs, having a women's team doesn't make any financial sense, whether you feel that is right or wrong. Despite the BBC relentlessly shoving women's football in our faces (even though there's not much demand for it), there's sod all money in the game and it wouldn't make any business sense to the Glazers.
Women's football is often faced with a lot of misogyny but at the same time it irritates me how it's now being shoved down our throats in a rather deluded attempt to suggest it's almost on par with the men's game. I have absolutely no objections to women's football and hate women being written off as footballers simply because of their gender and not based on merit, however the recent surge in media exposure is, in my view, only highlighting the glaring deficiencies in the game, rather than showing progress.
That's not to say it can't further improve, however it is always going to be limited and I think some people need to be realistic about it.

The quality of womens football isn't gonna change if everyone says, "oh womens football is shit, who would watch pay for that". While I agree that womens football isn't at the same level as some semi pro football but thats because its largely a semi pro setup in this country. City have a womens team because there on a charm offensive and have money coming out of there ears, it has to be profitable before the leeches would accept it.
