Varela is nowhere near good enough at present to be pushing for regular first team football, he gets forward OK, that's about it. He can't defend, at least not in the games I've seen him play.
I'm about 99.67777% sure Varela was a Fergie signing, someone else can verify that.

I also thought Varela was a Ferguson 'leaving gift'.
Janko has been a revelation this season. Looks a nailed on player.

Fergie seemed to rate Vermijl like you do Jay. And, Rafa is one of his favorite players. By that logic, I can't see how he'd have singed Varela? Esp with Fab still in our books (loaned out but not sold) then. www.manutd.com/en/Players-And-Staff/First-Team/Guillermo-Varela.aspx...the tenacious right-back earned a dream move from Penarol after impressing on trial at United

Janko is physically on another level to most of the rest.
Varela was on trial at United at the end of the season before he joined last summer & he's undoubtedly a Fergie signing, even though it went through after Moyes had taken charge of the ship and set a course for land.
Sadly I think Vermijl will be off, he's good enough to get regular football, just not at the very highest level I suppose.

Thank god I am not an admin/mod. I feel like locking this thread, whenever I read about replacing Raf with Coleman.

Saidy Janko. Play him as back-up. Also that Coleman wouldn't be coming as as an alternative to Rafael, but as a replacement. So we still wouldn't have a back-up right-backs. Midfield - Still not fixed. Left-back - Evra needs replaced. Centre-back - Need an experienced head to replace Vidic and Rio. All more important than a right-back. We cannot ignore that were losing 4 defenders (probably) and no matter what our midfield state is in, that's an issue. We can argue to toss about 'priorities', but I don't think its relevant, defence is something that has to be dealt with regardless this summer. We've just left ourself a lot of work to do. While I've always been a massive Rafael fan, his injuries are annoying. We need solidity and consistency in our defence next year. Having some solid younger defenders who struggle to be fit for 65% of games will be a big problem. On the youth front, hasn't Janko played more as a winger than defender?

Rafael/Janko/Vermijl -- Evans/Smalling -- Benatia/Jones -- Shaw/Buttner/Blackett.
There's a back four plus cover/rotation that would be strong enough, solid enough, and consistent enough without signing a right-back. Especially Seamus Coleman.

Regardless of whether people want Coleman to replace Rafael or not, what's clear is that we do need to buy a RB to prevent Smalling or Jones playing there next season. Janko ain't anywhere close to the first team, he hasn't even been playing at RB for the reserves. I'd hoped Vermijl was going to be given a chance (at least back up), but I don't think that'll happen, I think he'll either leave or be sent out on loan for another season. Coleman is nailed on for me, if that wasn't to happen then Arias. Rafael has been great for us at times but he's also been a huge liability, hence why I see him being replaced.

so, Gary Neville referred to Coleman as "sensational" whilst giving him man of the match during the Everton game...i wonder if Neville knows what he's talking about when it comes to right backs?

He had a good game, had about 4 sets of lungs on him. But Rafael was similar last season, it's not a huge upgrade. We also have more priorities. And why would he even want to come if it's under Moyes while Everton are pissing on us?

I honestly think Coleman and Rafael are at a similar level and think it be MAD to buy Coleman

Coleman was the best player on the pitch today and has been outstanding all year. Rafa has dropped off, probably because his manager doesn't rate him . It shouldn't be a position of need. We need to spend money elsewhere and Rafa may get his mojo back. But Coleman is a tremendous player.
You may all think wherewereu is bonkers but I agree with him up to a point- Coleman is the best right back in England this season, and by some distance.
