Would be a good solid signing, which seems to be what we're looking for this summer (Depay aside).

People like Otamendi, Coleman, Schneiderlin would be good signings but they don't stir the blood in the same way the young, talented firebrand that Depay is does. I'll edit the sig now and go do an intro

This could vault us into a great position to win the league and battle on all fronts...not sure what you would consider up to sniff signings?

I agree that they would be good signings - I'll be happy if they arrive and if we get all of them I think we'll reach our target for this season, which I am guessing is top 3, title challenge, QFs of CL and a good cup run. Its just they're not 'wow' signings - and by that I don't mean "weshouldgetronaldobalemessipelemaradonnaandronaldoagain" but I just mean someone that makes you sit up and go 'wow, he's quality.' I've only seen Otamendi a few times and he'd be good for us but he doesn't have that for me in the same way that Hummels does, or Laporte when I've seen him. Schneiderlin will be solid which is what we need but he doesn't tear through teams like Vidal does (unrealistic I know). Coleman fair enough, especially as there is a real dearth of right backs in world football right now (and centre backs for that matter). I'm conscious I don't want to come off as one of those fans who demands huge names every week no matter the cost or viability, and I would be happy if we got those 3 and were done for the summer (though I still think we need to sort out the striker role) - its just they don't excite me like Depay does. He could be a top 5 in the world player in 3-5 years if all goes well. Otamendi, Schneiderlin and Coleman will likely never really be better than 7/10. And that's probably our level right now, and arguably what we need - certainly they play in the positions in which we are lacking. But in 3-5 years time when Depay is a world beater they may be holding us back if they aren't replaced. Similar to Rojo really, who has also been solid when fit.

Fair points but Otamendi played at far higher level than either Laporte or Hummels last season. I don't want a CDM or a CB to excite me, I want them to go about their jobs effeiciently and consistently. Let the stardust come from other positions.

Everyone kept talking about the importance of Carrick to our team last season- was it because every time we saw him on the pitch he showed incredible skills on the ball or even world class passes (like Pirlo)...not quite. It's the quiet, professional job he does of closing down space to prevent opposing moves, controlling tempo in moving the ball out of our half, thereby letting the creative players play with more freedom. What 'excites' me about the prospect of signing Schneiderlin/Otamendi is what that would allow the likes of Herrera, Mata, Di Maria and Memphis to do thanks to better tempo and not shitting ourselves running backwards every time the opposition gets the ball.

Former Republic of Ireland international Paul McGrath reckons Van Gaal could solve his right-back woes with the purchase of his compatriot Coleman from Everton.
“He has got every attribute a right-back wants. He works so hard, he is a good defender, and he has got an engine like no other,” McGrath told talkSPORT.
“I think he would be great for Manchester United and I really hope that is one of the deals that goes through.”

Otamendi's a complete beast who takes no prisoners a-la Vida.Quick too. I also prefer his beard to that of Hummels & (beardless) Laporte looks about 12!

I get that, especially in the case of Schneiderlin, but I just think Otamendi will never get any better, whereas the two I mentioned have a really good chance to become world beaters in time, particularly Laporte. Otamendi will be a solid 7/10 next season whereas Laporte may be a 6 overall, but in a couple of years he'll be an 8. I personally prefer going for players in the Laporte mould, and I think that's what United have done time and again over the years as well as anyone else.
