I think we could do a lot worse than play Mata at #10, particularly in games against teams that will sit back. Him and Pogba are our only players with the ability to unlock defences like that with their individual technical quality IMO, and Pogba is probably better coming from a bit deeper.
I’d still be interested to see a 4-3-1-2 with Mata behind two of Martial/Rashford/Lukaku/Sanchez. Not like any of them is lighting it up on the wing right now, and if our full backs were Dalot and Shaw they’re fit enough and adventurous enough to dominate the flanks still.

If you're talking about in the Chelsea game in lieu of a match day thread then I think most would agree. If you're talking about long term does it really matter? He's been here for 5 years so it won't transform us or anything. Sorry for being a miserable fucker but switching a player or two around won't help us much atm. |

I reckon we'll look back at his misuse and it'll look as bad as Kagawa's, if not worse given how long it's been going on for. He played as well as David Silva in his first two seasons at Chelsea, and then Jose shipped him out shortly after. If we'd had a good manager in the 5 years he's been here I reckon he could have got back to that level. As Mitten notes, there's still time, but I really wouldn't blame him if he fucked off back to Spain and just spent 4/5 years as the mastermind of Valencia again. He could go back to Real Madrid if they didn't have the two best CMs in the world, the best ACM in the world, and the best young prospect for ACM in the world already. |
