The fact we paid over the odds for Fellaini and still need two central midfielders is an indictment in itself.

Manchester United boss David Moyes offered €25 million for Roma star Kevin Strootman in January, but the Serie A side said they will not be selling the Dutch midfielder for less than €40m. Source: La Gazzetta dello Sport
I would love it if he came here, but what the hell was Moyes looking at in the summer then...

So i just re-read Moyes Interview yesterday,
"People who know football will tell you centre-half is probably the toughest position," said Moyes.
"I even think it is harder to play centre-half than goalkeeper now.
"The movement and quality of the centre forwards means it is very difficult to play a young centre-half.
"We are trying to nurture one along and bring them into the team.
"Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans are already here. We will give them an opportunity to show what they are capable of."
This nurture he speaks of Keane possibly?

He could be a fine defender, just needs games now.

Evans is good when he has someone like Vidic alongside him. Smalling is very inconsistent and his confidence drops rapidly when playing against a talented opponent. In a sense Evans, Smalling, Rio and Pally are all the same kind of players, gifted centre backs. Vidic, Stam, Bruce are the brawn, power and solidity in a defence. I don't think Jones can replace Vidic in temperament. Brave and all that but Jones can't lead with his head down all the time and his tendency to drift out of a game. We need a powerful player like Vidic with a lot of experience to inspire and rebuild the defence. We also need the same kind of powerhouse or engine room in the midfield. DD and Deadwood should now spend all their time and energy finding those two players. Give him a break mate. He is only 22. Subotic would be the only CB who can replace Vida. Evans will be the ball playing partner. Age doesn't cut it. If he hasn't got the temperament now he will never develop it. He's a good player but that has absolutely nothing to do with leadership on the field. Rio is a leader, that temperament was developed long before he came to us at 24. As to the rest it seems that Evra, Rio and seven other veterans could go according to the papers. The morale in the team must wonderful!! The markets seems to have reached the £40 million mark on every half decent player. Moyes will need at least £120 million to achieve the three players he will be looking for - CB, DM and FB. Will our owners allow this level spending?

EVANS/JONES/SMALLING. Much of a muchness for me. No really stand out consistent player in that 3. We defo need some new blood at centre half. Jones will be world class. The other two should be good enough when consistently played. All 3 will be injured at the same time though. He should start showing signs of that soon. Last couple of times we've played against City he has let their attackers walk right past him and score.

When we played against city last year it was one of his best performances and promoted Fergie to say he could be one of our best ever players.

When we played against city last year it was one of his best performances and promoted Fergie to say he could be one of our best ever players. I'm talking about Aguero's goal at Old Trafford last season. Where he just ran past Rio and Jones as if they weren't there, and none of them even tried to tackle him. Jones was closest to him when he scored, and I think he could have done more. This season at the Etihad wasn't much better. Don't get me wrong, I have high hopes for Jones and for the most part he does well, even against the best of opposition, but he just needs to become more consistent at the highest level. I'm sure he will get there eventually, but I think it will take a few years. I don't think using him as RB and DM does him any favors in terms of his development. Play him as a CB and let him grow into that role over time, and eventually he'll be absolutely phenomenal for us.

Im a little concerned over the Vidic situation. Yes we need a clear out. Yes a lot of current players are not good enough. Yes some players are coming to the very end of their careers. Is Vidic in the above? Im not so sure. I would love to see the big serb stay on 2 more years. Play him sparingly enough and let him work with the younger defenders every day on the training pitch. Now we need a centre half for sure to add to our already growing shopping list. I think Vidic can do a job for us and find it a little puzzling that he is part of the "cull" that is apparently going to transform our club.
Papers reporting that Shaw and Coleman will be coming in the summer. Yes please.
