I know we don't all rate Balague but here he seems to talk some sense... "Van Gaal is a fantastic manager with a big idea of how the club should be run," Balague told Sky Sports News. "If you want to understand what's happened with Barcelona the last decade or so, you have to go back to the job he put in there. If you want to understand what Bayern Munich are now, you have to understand what he did at Bayern Munich." Guillem Balague on Louis van Gaal "He put the whole structure of [Barcelona] in place, started working on the positional game, he put the likes of Xavi and Puyol in the team and certainly was a guy whose dream was to have 11 players from the lower ranks of Barcelona win the European Cup. "So he suits Manchester United down to the ground. The timing is perfect." A ringing endorsement...laying the foundations for Barca and Bayern...not a bad CV... I was thinking about this myself. I was musing to myself all his previous clubs and I see a little pattern where all of them play great football even after he left, except for Alkmaar (no comment on this because I dont follow Dutch football). Maybe he'll be right fit to steady the battleship for someone like Klopp in the future (but if it's possible next season then do it) and like someone before me said, Rooney is totally fucked if he still runs around with Van Gaal in the helm.

I love how he mentions how he needs to admire characteristics about the character of his captains, Rooney fucked for sure.

This is nailed on providing we go in for him rather than let him talk to others. He has the pedigree, has the temperament, is in a position to take the job with no hassle, and most of the other suggested names (media) just don't strike me as realistic candidates - Conte, Simeone, Mourinho, Blanc, Klopp etc.

If Klopp is not going to happen, Guardiola was never going to happen when he signed for Bayern, that leaves van Gaal as the only "available" option. My main concerns are his age and fact he will be tied up with the Dutch until after the world cup. I think he is too old as a long term replacement and would prefer someone younger; de Boer for example. That said, van Gaal could provide a perfect foil for blooding someone that knows United through and through as assistant manager. Someone like Giggs or Ole, for example.

Seems like LVG is the obvious choice. Might even explain why Moyes was sacked now instead of at the end of the season. Glazers probably want to get LVG in instead of seeing him go to Spurs, and then end up out of options. I'm not totally convinced aboutimG though. He's managed big clubs, but he's only stayed 6 years in one club. And that was the first he managed(Ajax). In the big clubs he's managed he's only stayed for 3(Barca) and 2(Bayern) years at a time. Which is perfect if we can get Klopp in later, but otherwise it's a little concerning. Mochthezuma I agree. But what also has to be understood is that we were living in somewhat of a marvelous cocoon with SAF. No manager has or will ever achieve such consistent success over such a long period of time. He lived on a diet of trophies. Time brought him success and then success brought him all the time he needed to build team after team. The reality of modern football is that time is relative to results and success more than ever. Rarely will you see managers stay at clubs for longer than a period of three years, especially succesful ones like Mourinho. This has long bern the case on the continent, with the odd exception like Klopp of course. Van Gaal is totally tuned in to this reality. And he, at Ajax, demonstrated an ability to nurture and develop young talent. At Bayern he transformed Swcwiensteiger into a midfielder general. Nobody just hands out six year contracts it is just bonkers. We have learnt our lesson, time has ti be earnt.

Said it on here last night, i don't think the fact that Van Gaal is 62 is actually a real issue. The man could be with us for eight years if he's as passionate as Fergie was about the game. If we give Van Gaal a six year deal, that ties him to us until he's 68. It's all about getting us back on the rails in the immediate future.

Someone said it earlier, but id like to think he'd lay down a foundation of success and attractive football so that in 2,3,4 years time Klopp or whoever can take over (much like was intended last year). You just have to look how Bayern and Barcelona have progressed since his time with them - there is no better proponent of "Total Football" (Pioneered by Manchester native Jack Reynolds) than him. In terms of progressive/fluid football we'd have the real mccoy.
