What is the ideal position for Di Maria? Central midfield, heavily involved. I'm not so sure on a 'free role' but that could be semantics. He has great work rate and pressing, you want him involved at the heart of the pitch where he can then use his pace and dribbling to attack centrally. I think ideally in 3 man midfield with DM to give him freedom. He'd probably be fine in a 2 man midfield too. Certainly isn't some 'lightweight' number 10 though. Ideally though we could do with top class pacey winger to give us that freedom to get him in a system best suited for him.

What is the ideal position for Di Maria? Right now? I'd settle for on the pitch.

Reckon that him being in middle is "free role" LvG likes the lads to play fluid and react to what is in front of them on the pitch, but most definitely starting in the middle, when he takes off from there it creates space for strikers, and ADM will find them when they are open

Di Maria would be even more devastating if we actually had wingers/forwards, probably moreso wingers, of top quality with real pace.

Pace was what I was trying to highlight rat - the quality isn't the issue.
Poorly phrased on my part.

Someone else springs to mind (Bale, obviously ) but I have a recurring fantasy of doing the same thing for the Ox as we did for van Persie. How quick is Xherdan Shaqiri actually? I like him as a player but now that I think about it can't place if he is genuinely quick or not. Apparently he's going to Wolfsburg?!

Looks the real deal Internationally.

I'd prefer him to play wide where he has more space and can run at full backs - with nearly every team playing some sort of variation on a 4-2-3-1 the centre of the park gets too congested and (even though he can cope with that) could be more devastating wider - he can blow away any full back in the league with his pace and dribbling Exactly why we need a big strong player in the centre (Strootman/Pogba) to control things and feed the ball to the offensive players - ADM is a strong little fecker for his size but I don't want him wasting his time and energy in physical battles Above all I want him fit and be able to last 90+ minutes every game

Free role, starting in middle lets him pick his lanes, and when he sees space to outside and moves that way defenders have to move out there with him. Clears space for attackers, Rooney, Falcao, Rvp, Blind, Herrera, etc are going to benefit from him working in a free role picking his space. I know it sounds a bit "odd" but you'll remember when I was learning how to watch the matches way back when that I said I looked at it like it was a huge basketball court?? Still looks that way to me, especially with that floating Diamond on the attack. Players crossing and creating space for each other, or weaving and opening things up oin the back door

05/01/2015 10:21, Report by Tim Oscroft & Ben Hibbs Brilliant Angel Di Maria has been missed Angel Di Maria's spontaneous spark has been missing from Manchester United's play recently, but his team-mates are delighted he is back from injury and his sublime finish in the 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Yeovil was a flicker of the finesse he brings to the team.
Di Maria came off the bench after an hour at Huish Park and gave United a creative boost in the attacking third of the field as the Reds sought to break down a determined opposing defence.
Within four minutes, Ander Herrera had struck a stunning goal to give United the lead, but Di Maria was proving influential at both ends of the field. He cleared an effort off the line and then, in a late burst forward, he raced onto Wayne Rooney's through-ball and coolly chipped his finish over the onrushing Jed Steer in the Yeovil goal............
