he looks like a beast alright, but some of those tackles i can't work out how he won the ball. he seems to go to ground very easily/readily. looks dominant in the air, and i love the aggression and willingness to win the ball before the striker turns. similar in some respects to rojo. You are right in that respect. His aggression may lead to mistakes. Goes to ground readily seems more appropriate than easily. If you look at his stats, he is prone to mistakes, due to the risks he takes. He needs a partner who stays on his feet, whilst he attacks. Just a few stats where I compared him with Hummels, Laporte & Smalling to get a perspective of his game. Has highest average tackles won per game & also has highest average tackles lost per game. Tells us that he loves tackling. Smalling had least tackles won & tackles lost averages. Should be a good partnership as Smalling can cover up for him. Has lowest successful takeons @50% whereas Smalling is the clear winner @84.21%. Again, means Smalling has the pace to cover up. High on defensive errors & Errors leading to goals whereas Smalling has minimum (this season) Where Otamendi scores is Interceptions, Blocks & Clearances where he is a clear outperformer which necessarily is not Smalling's strength I think the low scores in certain aspects are not particularly negatives. More of Vidicesque, just needs a Rio. So, though there are some errors in his game, a stable & pacy partner should be able to solidify our defence. After all defence is all about partnerships. im assuming you meant the comparison to vidic, not vidal but i totally agree, he reminds me of vidic (with more pace). absolutely beast in the air, never going to shy away from a block or tackle. exactly what we need and would complement rojo/smalling very well. i haven't seen anything of laporte, so can't compare but if we're to go to a back 4 like last season (and not the back 3 it looked like we would) then i think otamendi could be the guy. just pay the £35m ed.

Sport witness, again all over it:
Valencia newspaper Super Deporte scream out from their front page on Tuesday 'Otamendi is 50' and that's no revelation on him being much older than everyone thought. The Spanish club want €50m, Otamendi's full buyout clause, if the player is to leave, they couldn't make that clearer if they tattooed it as a price tag on his forehead. Manchester United would obviously rather pay less and Super Deporte say the player's agent Eugenio Lopez has arrived in Spain from Argentina to present an offer from Manchester United and, as he sees it, get a deal sorted out. But there's also possibly an offer from Real Madrid.
Are Real Madrid really interested? The Madrid press and more specifically people like El Confidencial haven't been pushing this idea and it's got to be considered likely they'd know first. The idea of Real Madrid interest in Otamendi appears to be coming mainly from Valencia. In all honesty that's where the Manchester United reports started too, during the winter transfer window, but the Madrid press always appear to get leaks and therefore it would be surprising if they didn't have a clue Otamendi was a target. He's been linked at various stages but in just the same way every other good La Liga player has, there's been no huge clamour.
Therefore it could be that the name of Real Madrid is being used by Valencia in order to pressure Manchester United to hurry up and pay Otamendi's clause. None of this, despite cries from the front page and continually stories in the Valencia media, is anything new. Valencia have been repeatedly insisting that Otamendi's clause must be paid in full for some time, going back to the winter window.
Valencia's sporting director Amadeo Salvo was quoted in May by Super Deporte as saying that if he sold Otamendi for less than his clause, even €49m, then he'd be sacked by the Spanish club's owner Peter Lim. He also expected that Manchester United pay the transfer fee all in one go "if it's Manchester I think it'll be 50 in cash."
What is new is angry agent Lopez arriving in town, if he's actually arrived this time. Lopez's arrival coincides with internal strife at Valencia. When Salvo was speaking about it having to be €50m and that having to be cash, he also hit back on claims that Jorge Mendes could broker a deal, saying "Mendes is nobody in Valencia."
The problem is that Jorge Mendes IS quite clearly important at Valencia, regardless of how much that upsets the sporting director. Mendes helped Lim buy the club last year and has been friends with him for some time, he's also helped bring over players from Portugal. Valencia at the weekend signed Rodrigo Caio from Sao Paulo and Salvo didn't even know about it, according to Super Deporte, so there's going to be a clear the air meeting to see where everyone goes from here. At which point Otamendi's agent will burst through the doors is unknown. Perhaps the best hope of a quick update is if Valencia really upset Lopez and he speaks to the press again.
It's worth noting that Spanish newspaper AS reported on June 7th (we covered that here) that Lopez was set to fly in and seal a Manchester United transfer, so it's going around in circles. Lopez's intention in Valencia will be to complete the deal, he's not flown all that way for anything else, although it's unlikely it'd be announced until after the Copa America, whether he can do that is quite another thing... and it'll be interesting to see if the continuing domestic situation at Valencia helps or hinders things.

Sign him up now. Mention it after the Copa. Thats fine in my book

Yippee, Telegraph saying Madrid have swooped in for him and we're not getting into a bidding war.

No chance he'd choose us over Real. Gets to stay in sunny Spain, be part of the glamour boys at Real and he'd probably be a starter along with Ramos in the centre, with Varane and Pepe backing them up. Sigh.

Madrid links are inevitable chaps, when he is playing in Spain. Relax, I think its a done deal. Has an element of inevitability just like the Depay one.

We wont be discussing here if he had signed on the dotted line. The thing is there is a high probability of it being done. Things may go wrong, I don't know. Maybe Copa, maybe contract nittigritties, maybe waiting for July 1.... Its just my hunch after going through various sources, reading quotes, our requirements, his willingness, Agent Rojo & ADM, etc. I am highly optimistic about it Edit: You created the thread Stew, so believe. Just like I did after creating the Depay one

Thing is, if Real do "swoop" we've only got ourselves to blame - it's a release clause, if we wanted the player we should have agreed the deal - after the season he had in Spain & the fact he's playing at the Copa, Real were always going to enter into the mix with time - or any other big club for that matter. You rarely get a free run at a top player and, if you do, you'd do well to figure out why.
Also, I think it's fairly obvious they'll be trying to pair Otamendi and Varane as the future paring, if indeed they're interested.
That being said, it may just be Valencia stepping up the pressure a little.
