Welcome, RC. I've already been enjoying your posts. If you haven't started Season 2 of True Detective... you're not missing much.

I think the best way to think of TD Season 2 is: it's a completely different show. Sort of like TD is a record label, and Seasons 1 and 2 are two different bands. I believe much of the magic of the first season was because director Cary Fukunaga (not a curse word, it turns out) directed all of the episodes and showed a very mature, composed, technique. Harrelson and McConaughey also elevated the script and sold some of the crazier dialogue. Season 2 is the result of the director and the writer/creator have a feud, and PIzzolato trying to do it on his own with different directors but exerting control. Season 2 feels like a cover version of The Wire and something else. The actors in Season 2 are just not up to snuff either. Lower your expectations and maybe you'll enjoy it, like traffordbrown has been, but for me, season 1 was the best show I'd ever seen (until the final episode/lame conclusion of the mystery). Also, I live in LA and they keep using locations around here that are nowhere near where they pretend and it's annoying. Anyway, maybe you'll like season 2 and maybe it will get better since it's half over (they have to ratchet up the story/stakes now, it's episode 4 of 8 tomorrow). And Welcome!

Yeah that's a good way of looking at it. Its a shame Fukunaga left as his influence was so clear (peaking in that amazing 6 minute tracking shot in episode 4 of S1).

No offence guys but you are making this newcomers welcome thread into a True Detective series debate. Would be better to talk about The True Detective in the Golden Age of TV thread where others can join in. Just a thought. republikofmanc.proboards.com/thread/24207/golden-age-tv?page=43&scrollTo=594905
