Converted after Friday. He's excellent. Keep it up Mike.
Pity about the voice/accent.

Just realised he's only 25! If I were LVG, I'd bring Rio into the fold to mentor him. If he keeps fit and keeps improving at this rate, he can be legit world class. Exactly. That's why I'm always puzzled when people have been so eager to write him off (and Jones who's 23 FFS!). Losing Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra in one summer was hardly ideal and I expect us to have a better season defensively. I think Smalling has earned his shot as one of our first choice center backs.

A year ago I thought his time had passed and we should get rid. In the summer I still wasn't sure and thought it may have been a burst of form rather than a long term improvement. Now he is starting to really convince me. Good on the fella. Another excellent SAF buy it seems!

19/08/2015 09:36, Report by James Tuck SMALLING WANTS TO MAINTAIN WINNING START Chris Smalling is happy with Manchester United’s winning start to the season and wants the 100 per cent record to continue when Newcastle United visit this weekend.
The defender again impressed in Tuesday’s 3-1 Champions League play-off, first-leg victory over Club Brugge, finishing second in the Man-of-the-Match voting behind the inevitable winner, two-goal Memphis Depay. After three wins from three to open 2015/16, the Reds’ next assignment is against the Magpies at Old Trafford, where Louis van Gaal’s men will kick off the round of Barclays Premier League fixtures for the third consecutive week. “We must continue our good start,” Smalling declared on MUTV. “It is another home game and we have to assert ourselves early on. “It is good that we again get to be in the first game that plays and, hopefully, set the benchmark for the weekend.” Smalling partnered Daley Blind at centre-back in a defence that largely contained Brugge, whose fortunate goal came via two deflections. The central defenders and full-backs Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw have played every minute of all three games so far and Smalling believes it is paying dividends. The 25-year-old said: “Last season, there were that many changes, it was hard to get a good run – even though I still don’t think we conceded that many goals in the second half of the season. “But that togetherness and that work ethic is showing on the pitch now because we are not letting that many chances in.” On Darmian, who continues to shine, Smalling added: “He is terrific; in any one-v-one situation he backs himself and he gets forward as well with some useful crosses.” www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2015/Aug/Chris-Smalling-wants-Manchester-United-winning-start-to-continue.aspx

Just got bullied. very true, although i don't think we'll get many refs that allow that sort of physical mismatch go without giving some fouls against him the rest of the european campaign.

Still think he will only ever truly win over the "The True Reds" when he puts such performances against City, Chelsea and Arse. I am just glad that he has got into a good understanding with Blind and if Rojo was to come in when he is fit that it will be the same. Keep it up Mike

Keep it up Mike He's already done it against City and Arse last season. Most Utd fans I speak to think he's been fantastic since Christmas.

I am just glad that he has got into a good understanding with Blind and if Rojo was to come in when he is fit that it will be the same. Keep it up Mike He's already done it against City and Arse last season. Most Utd fans I speak to think he's been fantastic since Christmas. IMO he really turned the corner right after the holidays and stepped up his game considerably. But I would have to say that this year is exponentially better, even as well as he was playing at last seasons end. I think he has taken the leadership role in back, and it has matured him and I think the responsibility of accepting that role has seriously sharpened his vision. He seems to see everything on the pitch. Add to that a pair of fullbacks that as good as any in PL, and will no doubt be recognized as best in league by seasons end, and the "mind meld" that he and Blind seemn to enjoy and United surely has as good a defense as any in the league. Got some youngsters coming up that can play back there as well. Barring injury United is sorted in back for a long time to come. Another thing, LvG's handling of the summer tour and leading up to the league has been excellent in terms of getting the players in shape for the season. No injuries this season compared to last year is night and day, and I think that a lot of injuries to the back line seemed to have occurred when a player was going balls out to try an cover for some kind of mistake. The teamwork back there is going to be a part of keeping them injury free, as well as the depth of the squad. I expect a great season from Mike and the gang
