Ireland flanker Sean O'Brien will miss Sunday's World Cup quarter-final against Argentina after being handed a one-week suspension.
The flanker was given the ban after admitting that he punched France's Pascal Pape in the early stages of Sunday's World Cup Pool D game. O'Brien's ban is another major blow for Ireland with Paul O'Connell and Peter O'Mahony already ruled out by injury. Fly-half Johnny Sexton is also an injury doubt for the quarter-final. Team captain O'Connell, whose international career is now over as he is retiring from Ireland duty at the end of the tournament, will miss the remainder of the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury against France. World Cup quarter-final: Ireland v Argentina
Ireland may gamble on the fitness of fly-half Johnny Sexton for their World Cup quarter-final against Argentina. Sexton limped off in the first half of Sunday's Pool D win over France with a groin injury and is doubtful for this Sunday's last-eight tie in Cardiff. The Leinster playmaker is back running in training and will be given until Friday to prove his fitness. With captain Paul O'Connell already ruled out, Ireland can ill afford to lose another inspirational leader. Jonny sexton fit for Argentina.. have to say the way Madigan played against France, it wouldnt have been the end of the world being without sexton.. the bigger losess are no doubt O'Mahony and Sean O'Brien - Paulie yes, but I do think Henderson is more than a capable replacement
