Rustin Cohle's Guide to Summer Solace:
Step 1: Get Champions League at all costs. None of this works and no one will come to us if we miss out on the CL 2 times in 3 seasons. Once is a blip, twice is a rut. Other potential targets: N/A. Names we don't want to hear: Europa League.
Step 2: Replace Louis. The obvious name here is Mourinho. Other potential targets: Pochettino, Emery, Conte, Simeone. Names we don't want to hear: Rodgers, Moyes, Giggs.
Step 3: Sack Woodward. This is the most crucial step long-term and should happen regardless of the outcome of Step 1. Louis & Moyes will be/were both sacked for failing to get CL once; Woodward should definitely go for failing to appoint the right man twice. As far as I'm concerned his replacement could be a squashed kumquat, but in dreamland David Gill would realise how fucked FIFA is and come back and save us. Long shot, I know. Other potential targets: literally anyone. Names we don't want to hear: Ed Woodward.
Step 4: With all the behind the scenes drama out the way (and it should all be in place before the end of May), we move on to transfers. The first thing we need is a world-class attacker with both creativity and goals. Our top scorer this season has had the most inconsistent career I have ever seen, and so we need someone we can rely on. Preferably not a striker or left winger as we have enough players occupying those positions (Rooney, Martial, Memphis, Lingard, Wilson). The obvious player that fits the bill here is Griezmann. He is young (but not too young), proven, reliable and a Manchester United fan, so likely to consider us. He also has a release clause of roughly £60m, so when the new CEO comes in he can handle the negotiations very quickly, perhaps even getting them done before the Euros which is likely what the player will prefer. Other potential targets: Kane, Icardi, Mane. Names we don't want to hear: Neymar, Bale, Messi, Di Maria.
Step 5: Goalkeeper. De Gea has saved us more times than I care to admit, but we'd be fools not to at least prepare for the possibility of another approach. The ideal situation is keeping him, but if he goes we need to get a top replacement in immediately, and I think it will be clear fairly quickly if we need to face up to another Real Madrid assault. Other potential targets: Leno, Ter Stegen, Navas, Lloris. Names we don't want to hear: Mignolet.
Step 6: Centre-back. Blind isn't a good enough long-term option, whereas Rojo and Jones simply aren't good enough. Smalling needs a top partner he can sit next to. I personally think Laporte is the best option here, and with a release clause of roughly £35m he'll certainly be one of the cheapest. He will also give us the long term stability that some other options may not provide. Other potential targets: Stones, Godìn, Alderwiereld. Names we don't want to hear: Ramos, Pique.
Step 7: Central midfielder. Carrick is more or less past it, and Schweini isn't getting any younger. We aren't weak in this area yet but we need someone young who can learn from Schweini for a year or two before taking over and dictating our play for the next decade. Tielemans appears to be the real deal and half of Europe is eyeing him up. If we move fast we could nab him. Other potential targets: Alli, Ward-Prowse, a time machine with Scholes from the late 90s bundled inside it. Names we don't want to hear: Pogba, Kroos, Cleverley.
Assuming we get those 3 first choice targets in that's about £120m on transfers in (before anything we get from sales, which if Woodward goes may actually be an amount worth counting) which should be well within our financial power.
I'll come back in September and see how many of these steps we've achieved. Right now we'll be lucky to tick one off.

The sad thing is, everything I wrote is very achievable. As straightforward as big transfers can be. I'm not demanding we buy Ronaldo Messi and Neymar, just impressive but realistic targets. Yet none of it will happen.

The problem you have with Laporte is he's foreign and you would think as soon as real or barca make a noise he could well be after a move, were as the British lads don't tend to move, if we got stones, not really another English club to go to from Utd, providing we get back to the level we was at, either 1 would be a good signing both still very raw and a lot of money, Rio was raw and was a lot of money, are those 2 as good not sure but they could be up their in time. Mahrez is having a superb season but is it a 1 off or is he a player and it's all just clicked into place for him at a older age, Leicester would easy be asking 20-30 mil and probably better younger players out there for that cash. If I was to go after any Leicester player would be Kante the guys a beast. Zlat would be awesome and would be amazing to see in a Utd shirt, but realistically makes no sense at all. For me next year would be Jose, laport/stones, kante, alli,

He's probably the best one on current form.
