we suck
we went ahead 3-0 (roar that is) and now its 3-2
we're going to get knocked out i can sense it and when we do, Aloisi please, get rid of north, brown and pretty much every other useless defender and bring in one or two CB's (a starter next to Devere and a good backup) and a starting LB (Meredith is the goal, Zullo is a good fall back), if we lose McClaren next season life is going to be very hard for us

anyway
Western Sydney Wanderers 5-4 Brisbane Roar
defense, not even once.
Was a great game for the neutral, for me though as a roar fan i was having a fit, after going ahead 3-0 and then throwing it away with terrible defending. What a disgrace, Hervas can go, as can Brown. Broich and McKay both need to come under the cap now, absolute legends but age has caught up with them both and marquee's they are not. Credit to the Aloisi bros, they really turned this team around but it seems it was a step too far from 7th place to potential double winners, last 3 weeks have to be the worst, from looking like doing the double to winning nothing, the backline disgraced themselves today. Wanderers showed a lot of character to get back in and showed fight, but them too, they better not play like that at Adelaide or that will be an ugly one, 6-0 or something crazy.

I guess for the offseason for the roar:
Needs (in order): 1. Retain McClaren, Borello, Clut, Donachie and all our young talent 2. Get a left back 3. Get an experienced starting CB to replace Jade North (not good enough anymore, let him walk), Donachie to the bench 4. a Defensive midfielder to replace Hervas (shame city have brattan)
What i would do:
Resign: Jamie McClaren (Marquee Deal #1, whilst he may have european interest, keeping the 2nd most prolific scorer is crucial)
Luke Donachie (disappointing this season but he has a place at the club)
Henrique (duh, can't release the slippery fish)
Devante Clut (realistically should be our starting attacking mid next season, him and McClaren are so good going forward, our front 3 of Borello, McClaren, Oar and Clut behind those 3 would be the best young force in the league)
Thomas Broich (to a non-marquee deal, around 150-200k a year, not worth marquee wages anymore) Matt McKay (same with Broich)
Steven Lustica (he is a good midfielder to have, honestly between him and McKay it would be close for a starting spot)
Jade North (on a dirt cheap deal, transition him to a backroom role also, similar to Broich and McKay, like anything more than 100k is too much, he'd be on the bench)
Release: Corey Brown (i've had it with him, can't defend)
Javier Hervas (has only one foot, pretty much made us a lot worse in midfield anytime he was on)
Shane Steffanuto (has been a fantastic servant to the club, so this is more of a retirement hopefully, he isn't up to it anymore, would offer him some kind of job at the club as a coach)
Jean Carl Solorzano (this is a 50-50 one, he hasn't done a whole lot this season but its hardly his fault either but i like Kitto as an option due to age)
Corona (i think he's probably retiring but if he wants to stay on he could be a solid player for us)
Sell: Dimi Petratos (if the european rumors are true he could get a good bit of coin)
Swap Deal: Jerome Polenz for Storm Roux (now central coast need to defend better, a lot better, Polenz is a defensive minded RB for sure, well he'd give them that steel and thuggery on the Right flank that wouldn't be easy to break down, Roux coming off an injury also, they don't know how good he could be, roar does this cause they bank on Roux returning and being one of the best young RB's in the league again and him and Hingert hold down RB for the next 5 years at least, provided one or both don't go overseas)
Alt: Jerome Polenz for Ivan Franjic (if that doesn't work, Polenz for Franjic makes sense for both, Franjic has been a bust mostly for City, Polenz would be a better fit under JVS, provided he stays.
Signings: Avraam Papadopoulos (recently played with Shenhua, at 31 hopefully his wages aren't ridiculous, could be an astute signing, he was born in Melbourne so i think he would be a non-visa foreigner, anything more than 250k is pushing it though given its a capped league, and with him playing in the CSL for Shenhua, another CSL club might just come in with a much better offer)
Michael Zullo (time to bring him back home, one of the many fringe national team LB's, he would add a lot to our team and be a lot better used under us than JVS)
James Holland (playing for Duisburg in the 2nd division in germany and they are dead last with the worst goal difference also, i think it wouldn't be a stretch to bring him back and under the cap, mind you as one of the higher paid cap palyers but still under the cap)
Daniel Alessi (i'm kind of surprised Western Sydney didn't resign him but anyway, if he isn't back at WSW, bring him in)
Ryan Kitto (prolific at State level and wasn't bad at all for newcastle, surprised he was released, last season 18 goals in 27 for West Torrens Birkala (aka Adelaide Galaxy))
Squad for 16-17:
Young Roux/Hingert-Papadopoulos-Devere-Zullo Holland-Corona/McKay Clut Borello-McClaren-Oar
Bench: Broich, Henrique, Donachie/North, Hingert, Theo
Then you would rotate with others in the squad

I enjoy reading your Aussie and Asian football threads, Spens. It's part of the world that gets pretty much no coverage over here, so it's nice to be able to stay informed. So keep up the good work, and all that.

Butters (ok Mitch Nichols) has gotten himself in trouble for giving the 2 finger salute to the traveling roar fans after the game.
He ran 50 meters to his former club's traveling fans to give them the gesture.

Newcastle Jets are pleased to announce that the club has secured the services of talented 20-year-old attacking midfielder Devante Clut on a two-season deal. Clut arrives at the Jets following a two-and-a-half-year stay in the sunshine state with one of the Jets’ Hyundai A-League rivals, Brisbane Roar. Clut appeared off the bench in eight matches for John Aloisi’s men in season 11 of the A-League, however began to make his name on the Australian football scene in the seasons prior. Indeed, as a teenager Clut scored a stunning goal on his professional debut for Roar against Wellington Phoenix at Suncorp Stadium. Clut made his mark on Brisbane’s 2015 AFC Champions League campaign by playing in four of the club’s six Group G games and netting a brilliant brace on matchday 3 against K-League Classic heavyweights Suwon Bluewings on the Gold Coast. Clut, an Australian youth international, also scored a double against Spanish heavyweights Villarreal in Roar’s 3-0 LFP World Challenge win in Queensland in June last year. Newcastle Jets Head Coach Scott Miller said Clut would be a valuable addition to his squad given the experiences that he has already encountered in his burgeoning career. “Devante typifies the type of young player that I want to attract to the club,” Miller said. “His commitment to the Jets is for two seasons, and that is significant as his aim is to become an important part of the club in the near future.” Clut, who will link with his new teammates when the Jets’ squad assembles for pre-season training in late June, said that he’s excited to be making the move to the Hunter after some enjoyable times as a Roar player. “When I first heard from Newcastle I was excited because I feel that the Jets are a club that is getting better and will continue to get better,” Clut explained. “I’m really excited to meet Scott [Miller] in person, the coaches, staff, and my new teammates, and get to work at the club.” “Roar was my first ever professional club and I have a lot of good memories with the fans in Brisbane. But now it is time for me to learn and develop at the Jets, and aim to play and perform for the fans of Newcastle.” Jets fans can look forward to watching a player eager to control the game and light up Hunter Stadium with instinctive attacking play. “I have a lot of room for improvement as a professional player, but my style of football is not to kick the ball long, but to control the game and play as big a role as I can in the action of each match,” Clut added. “I like to pull the strings.” Read more at www.newcastlejets.com.au/article/clut-recruit-determined-devante-joins-jets/1dbtjae08gnns1g0bltm6tdhfc#c15EiijCBeKzeqRS.99Apparently he didn't work hard enough at Brisbane, hence why he never got any game time. If its true fair enough. Still though this sucks for us. Anyway congrats to the Jets you just picked up a fantastic player. Wish we could have kept him but if he wasn't putting in work we can't do much about that (though would still be better than one-foot hervas who should be released when we announce those). He looked like he would be the breakout star for us this season but it landed up being Jamie Mac and Brandon Borello. If he plays at attacking mid behind the striker, with Nordstrand on the wing, if the Jets manage to find a good CB and a good foreign striker that can get them more than 10 goals i think they could be a top 6 team again.

Sydney FC Stalwart Ali Abbas is off to the K-League (not sure which team yet) and is expected to move after Sydney's round of 16 match in the Champions League.
Thats a loss that will be hard to replace. But with them signing Alex Wilkinson from Melbourne City i think they're ok, does make the race for left backs interesting (phoenix, roar, jets and mariners i would imagine are all looking for left backs)
Grand Final is this weekend and pretty much all the tickets are sold out, its only limited viewing seats left (should be a very good crowd, if not a full house in Adelaide for that one). The game will be hype

Perth Glory has signed Socceroo and former English Premier League utility player Chris Herd.
The West Australian played 36 times for Aston Villa in England's top flight and represented the Socceroos on three occasions.
The 27-year-old had most recently played for Chesterfield in England's League One.
Herd's signing continues a concerted effort by the Glory to attract homegrown talent.
In the last six months the club has lured big names Shane Lowry, Adam Taggart and Rhys Williams back to Perth.
Herd played juniors at Joondalup and Bayswater City before moving to the UK to join Villa's academy side.
The Glory expects to hear in the next two weeks whether Johnny Warren medallist Diego Castro will return next season.
It is understood his wage demands have increased significantly after his outstanding first season in the A-League.
(ABC news)
What a team they're putting on out west, if they get rukyavytsa back i think they're going to be almost unbeatable
as it stands they have brought in over january to now: Shane Lowry, Rhys Williams, Chris Herd, Adam Taggart, Andy Keogh
that is an almighty pull, not to mention they might just bring in Brad Jones as a keeper, if they manager that one (he is in the netherlands at NEC so they might just do it) then i think, given Lowe's man management abilities, they might just do it, only worry is that Lowe might be out managed (tactically that is, he isn't a tactical genius)

Covic Risdon, Williams, Lowry, Warren Harold, Zadkovic?, Herd, Castro Taggart, Keogh
Maybe Harold up front also, though they could use another winger. This probably means Marinkovic is gone (shame too, he was their best player last season) and Castro and Keogh are marquee's.
