Zlatan Ibrahimovic has taken a pay cut of more than £200,000 a week to rejoin Manchester United.

The 35-year-old forward’s return was announced yesterday after he signed a one-year deal that, it is understood, amounts to about £125,000 a week, compared with the £350,000-a-week contract that brought him to Old Trafford last summer.

Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals before his season was cut short by a cruciate knee ligament injury in April. United opted not to extend his deal at that point — reassigning his No 9 shirt to Romelu Lukaku when he joined from Everton this summer — but the forward has made strong progress since.

“I come back to finish what I started,” Ibrahimovic told ESPN. “From my first year the team has been winning trophies and learning the sacrifice it takes to win a trophy. And the mental part, and that is what I think the coach [José Mourinho] brought the team, the mental thing and me as a player.

“There were a couple of teams reaching out, wanting Ibra-kadabra in their team, but I had such a great year with United, we had a great year, we won three trophies. Fantastic guys, great club. I’m super happy. I come back to finish what I started.”

Ibrahimovic’s previous contract included substantial bonus payments and it is understood that similar bonuses are included in the new deal.

He has been undergoing his rehabilitation with United over the summer and it is expected that he could be ready for competitive action by December, a remarkable time scale given his age. Such is Mourinho’s admiration for the former Sweden forward that the United manager also likes the idea of Ibrahimovic spending time around developing players, such as Marcus Rashford and Lukaku, acting as a de facto coach to his young team-mates.

“We are delighted Zlatan is on the road to recovery and we are equally delighted to have his ambition and experience back with us,” Mourinho said. “After his contribution last season he deserves our trust and we will be patient waiting for him to return. I have no doubt that he will be important in the second part of the season.”

Whether Mourinho envisages a way in which Ibrahimovic and Lukaku can start alongside each other in the same line-up, or whether the older player will simply serve as cover for the Belgian international, remains to be seen.

But, in the meantime, Lukaku and Ibrahimovic have already struck up a strong bond after the latter gifted the former his shirt from last season.

“Lukaku called me and said, ‘Bro, can I get the No 9 shirt?’ Ibrahimovic explained. “I said, ‘I’m not on that level that I will make it difficult for you, I just want you to feel happy and feel welcome. So I give you the No 9. But I will take the No 10.’ That’s the way we do it. So I never left, I just upgraded my number.”

• Anthony Martial, the United forward, and Moussa Sissoko, of Tottenham Hotspur, have been omitted from the France squad to play World Cup qualifiers against Holland and Luxembourg. Didier Deschamps has said that he will not allow players to leave the training camp to discuss a transfer, which could have an impact on Arsenal’s chances of signing Thomas Lemar from Monaco.
