I’m not as down on Maguire as some are on here. I think he’s a decent CB (albeit with a serious limitation) who is struggling for form and a preposterous price tag. It’s no coincidence that the best he’s looked this year by a mile, is when he’s been paired with Bailly. Bailly who has been fit the last few games. I imagine Ole feels he can’t trust Eric with injuries because it shouldn’t be anything to do with talent. But Lindelof really should be 4th choice now, he’s been that bad. It’s a dreadful indictment of Ole and Woodward that he starts every game. I agree with that to an extent, but you probably wouldn't trust him alongside Axel as a partneship,as you would say if we had a Vidic at the club,Axel would thrive along side such a player. I think taking the capts armband off him my ease some of the pressure & scrutiny. The one thing is clear to me,he does not have a natural football brain,he's a player that needs continual coaching to improve decision making & positional sense. But we know he’s not getting the armband taken off him. Certainly not until the summer. And even then it’s unlikely.

There needs to be some deal worked out where he 'steps down to concentrate on his form' or some other sycophantic nonsense. Ole won't take it from him.

The only time we will see a change of capt is when we get a change of manager, both can't come soon enough.

Lindelof is a coward you could put that soft twat with Vidic and he would still hide from a challenge, Maguire looks better along side Bailly probably because he can take a back seat and let him do the aggressive stuff, but Bailly is always injured and the other two are shit, not good is it? Why is why we should be playing Axel. We need to accept the fact young defenders make mistakes and see how he develops between now and the end of the season. As I said before, we know what Lindelof is at this stage. We don’t yet know what Axel is. We need to find out. Axel has shown he can do it but like VDB isn't allowed to develop under Ole at the rate he should be.

There needs to be some deal worked out where he 'steps down to concentrate on his form' or some other sycophantic nonsense. Ole won't take it from him. It would actually be a pretty simple PR exercise. "It's been a tough year for Harry, who has fought manfully, etc. etc. For the good of the team, he has decided to step down from the captaincy in order to focus on his defending. Luckily, in Bruno we have a natural leader who is willing to take on the armband." The 'fought manfully' bit made me throw up a little in my mouth, but if that's what it takes to save face and make this happen, so be it.

Yeah I get the argument that you need two players who compliment each other to make a partnership. That’s true if you’re playing two up front too. And Maguire looks better with Bailly next to him because he has the pace to bail(ly) him out. However, as above, anyone would look miles better with Rio next to them. The defence would instantly be more organised and less likely to make positional errors because there would be a world class player and world class leader in there. But I mean, Rio Ferdinand’s presence on a football pitch wouldn’t automatically mean Lindelof could win a header. If the ball comes into the box and it doesn’t land on Rio’s nut, we’d be in massive trouble still.

Why did he sign him then.. Well, it's said that he was the boards choice. Jose wanted Maguire didn't he.

Lindelof came at a nice cut price 37 iirc He was rated highly in Portugal so it wasn’t a crazy signing at the time tbf. It is crazy to keep picking him and hoping he’ll improve when he keeps making the same mistake over and over however.

I do vaguely remember there were good things said about him when he signed, you're right. My comments were definitely made in hindsight.

He's not an awful defender. Just really not suited to the Premier League and of course really not suited to play alongside Maguire. Pre-COVID Barcelona were interested and we should have flogged him then when we could have got a good price. Now of course it is a lot harder to shift him.
