More seriously, I think we know right from wrong, pretty much all of the time. We’re not angels, God knows that’s true, but almost all of us strive to, as my mother used to advise, “just be nice and have good manners”.

Or rather we do until it comes to who buys our football club, it would seem. At that point, most hands seem to go up in supplication to whomever has the most money, regardless of anything more sulphurous. If you make our club successful, we’re prepared to overlook pretty much anything.

Why is that?

You can apparently be part of despicable theocratic dictatorships, you can derive wealth from heinous business practices, plunder resources and money in any number of shady, downright illegal and certainly immoral ways and still football fans are prepared to excuse all of this in return for silverware, investment in the squad, or even just for Premier League survival.

Football Leaks has revealed what David Goldblatt has called “the systemic colonisation, corruption and co-option of fans, players, clubs and regulators by the rich and powerful”.

But hey, that’s alright, we won a trophy! Yay!

C’mon, we’re better than that, aren’t we? We can be.

But as we start to fully understand what ‘sportswashing’ might mean and how it works, and as investigations into financial dealings at football clubs hopefully become more rigorous, surely we need to stop passing by on the other side, or holding our noses, in return for the promise of big money.

No amount of investment in a club, its academy, training pitches, infrastructure or anything else should be allowed to clean up either the money or the investors. And supporters of such clubs should not be excusing these people from criticism, as they all too often do, simply by suggesting critics are merely jealous of the investment. To do that is to say we are all amoral and I’m sure that isn’t true, even if sometimes it seems that life is a parade of value-free vaunting of vulgarity.

It seemed bitterly ironic that as football games on Remembrance Sunday weekend honoured those who fought in the wars to preserve our freedom from oppression, many football clubs across Europe are now owned by people who understand all too well that they don’t need armies to acquire foreign assets anymore, they just need money.

Money invades and overtakes far more efficiently and comprehensively than any tank can and soon enough it has laid down roots and paid for a lot of propaganda to convince the masses that it’s all a very good thing indeed and nothing at all to be worried about. And soon enough, people are thanking you for making their dreams come true, as the trophies flow. That’s how it works. That’s how we’ve all been co-opted into accepting the unacceptable.

The question we need to answer is why does the potential of winning football competitions – or just having a good team – allow us to be blinded in this way? Is it because we know the world is so steeped in sin that we feel powerless to affect change, so we go along with whatever gives us fleeting joy because life is short and the good times too few? I suspect so, and that is understandable, but it is exactly what the monied and powerful want.

They crave our moral indifference so they can use their money as an air freshener in the sewer of their lives. Then they feed off our praise of their generosity to self-aggrandise and look munificent. They must think we are stupid.

They are not Santa Claus come to give presents of expensive players. Football Leaks are drawing back the curtain to reveal nothing less than a cesspit.

Does football remove our empathy? Does the craving for victory obliterate conscience? It doesn’t matter how much money these people spend on your club, if they’re bad people, are part of bad regimes, are an exploitative global capitalist hegemony, royal family, oligarch, plutocratic megalomaniac, or anything else, then we owe it to ourselves and to those who suffer under these people to not just accept it as though it’s all fine. It isn’t.

You don’t need to be as cunning as a fox who’s just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University to understand what is going on. Details of who owns and invests in our football clubs are available.

I know my dad, now 30 years dead, would be disgusted at the current state of affairs, he’d have thought we’d all gone absolutely mad in letting clubs be taken over by such inappropriate people. But then, who would have noticed another madman around here?

He would have told anyone who would listen “I didn’t fight the war for this” and today as I write on Remembrance Day, I know, at last, and for once, he would’ve been right.

I’d suggest you listen to Dunc’s transfer window podcast. He talks about this at length and send to think they’re not getting out of this any time soon. UEFA, the Premier League and FIFA all looking into them. Perm are meeting on Thursday. There’s an FFP clause in the league too to do with increasing wages. You are only allowed 7% per year unless it’s thro gate revenue or sponsorship. But if that sponsorship has been cooked which is clearly, sorry I mean allegedly the case then you are in serious shit.

He can take UEFA to court all he wants over FFP.

Won't get much joy taking the PL to court. League rules are league rules and were ratified by city along with the rest of the clubs. If they can't provide legitimate proof then they are in breach of the rules. Der Spiegels claims make it look like city are going to have a tough time doing so.

Yup, nothing will happen unless punitive action is handed down and that cunt of a club is told to fuck off and face the music. The powers that be need to grow a collective pair here, which I dont think will happen.
