Well, no goal fest but a great game for the young players and debutants. It will have done a lot of good for Gomes and Chong. Stoked that Greenwood got the winner, that will be good for his confidence. Not sure what to think of Fred still. Gomes seems like a similar type of player can can play where Fred likes to play but Gomes is better. Would have liked to see Garner get in the game. Rashford has the yips, not sure what's going on with him in front of goal. Rojo gets MOTM just for being his usual insane self. Just to be clear- you’re talking about Fred and Angel Gomes? Because they don’t play in the same position in any way shape or form. |

I thought Gomes showed why he is on the fringes today. Pretty touches and a couple of nice moves but no cutting edge. The 1-2 give and go through the middle devistates the U-23 ... it does not work well against more mature defenders.
Chong looked awkward. Not really anything in there to suggest he is close to first team.
Greenwood saved the day. Looks a real threat cutting in on the right. Rather anonymous when left up top.
And again ... Matic is old and slow. Was out of sorts and the ball kept getting away from him while dribbling. Garner or someone else cannot step up soon enough.

Pointing to a bunch of stats in a fairly dire game against weak opponents doesn’t change my opinion. You can like Fred, I won’t try to stop you. As I said, I still do t know what to think of him. If ever there was a match designed for him to dominate it was this one. And I don’t think he did. And I don’t think he’s going to be part of the long term plans. |

And I don’t think he’s going to be part of the long term plans. Stats don't always tell the whole truth that's right. However in Fred's case in tonight's game it simply shows what was pretty obvious and simple to see: he ran the game, was the one player most involved in the build up, delivering opportunities for the attackers with high precision passing while at the same time winning the ball back numerous times. I understand that we still don't know if he will be the player we need but the 90mins today were not a case of I see it this way, you see it another way. Doesn't matter who we played against, he was instrumental. Not only the stats show that but also the naked eye. And there's also no point comparing him to angel as the both of them don't share anything, like nothing. Do we compare matic to mata? No because they have nothing in common apart from playing for the same team. |

And I don’t think he’s going to be part of the long term plans. I like Gomes a lot. I am an avid watcher of the u23s and u18s. I would love to see him involved more often in the first team, but the truth is he cannot be any further back than the number 10. Fred can and does play the 6 and the 8. I still think Fred gets bullied too easily in England, but in Europe he will be a titan for us. Gomes doesnt play the 6 or the 8 for any youth levels, or at least didn't last year. He plays 10 and sometimes wide. Hes even been a striker. But Galbraith, Garner, Levitt and McCann are all much, much better suited to the 6 or 8 than Gomes. Comparing him with Fred is insane. Fred drops back to collect the ball from the CBs then tries to knit the play in the final 3rd. I highly doubt any manager would want Gomes covering the backline! By all means remain unconvinced of Fred, I agree he has a long way to go, but championing Gomes to play in his position could well be a much worse option. |

Marked report card, "could of done better" (especially Rashford at finishing). Could be worse, we could be Wolves fans.
But not a total disaster, there were definitely positives to take from it and I'll look forward to the same team playing in the cup next week to see if this previous 90 minutes helps their game plan gel further.
I thought Fred looked very assured for a player with so little game time behind him and sure, the visitors were light-weights, but he can only do what he's been asked to against the opposition in front of him.
Great to see Dalot back and Rojo putting in a performance that I always thought was somewhere in his locker. Although probably a "one off", how good would it be if he could take that form into every game (as we need more from squad players generally).
