Deserved. Shite manager who has no clue what to do with the talent at his disposal. The likes of Grealish, Sancho and Rashford sitting on the bench whilst Mount is in the team, and Saka and Henderson are subbed on first. And he'll be rewarded with a nice big new contract to guarantee England waste the players they have and win nothing. I just don't get the obsession with him he's average at best That also applies to Rice & Phillips(a shitter version of Mcfred)

all the comments above are generally along the same lines that i have had with friends and work colleagues this morning(about southgate being similar to ole and both those finals having similarities). I cant understand why southgate was getting such praise of the media this morning because they should be calling him out on his in game management that just let italy waltz back into the game and totally dominate the second half. Mancini just outclassed him at the end of the day. Both ole and southgate seem to get a total free ride from the press for some reason. They don’t rock the boat. The reason they are employed where they are.

Criticising him for not standing up is fucking dumb. It’s evident the manager decides who takes the penalties in this England set up. It’s not like 1996 when Venables asked who fancied one and Paul Ince kept his hand down.

As annoying as the penalty stuff is, the worst part is Italy were not invincible and England absolutely could have won with a better Plan B. They also needed to be much more aggressive when on top - too much caution is one of Southgate's big weaknesses. But eventually, even if we scored a second, Italy would have gotten on top by about the 60 minute mark I reckon.
At that point, bring on Rashford and Sancho for Mount and Trippier. Go 4-4-1-1 with Kane as the 10, but make him and Rashford drop off the defence in possession so more like a 4-6-0. Rashford asked to press the shit out of Jorginho and then send the ball wide to Sterling and Sancho if he wins it. We know from the PL that Jorginho is not infallible when pressed, he would make mistakes and then the two wingers and strikers could bomb forward.
It's still cautious (the time to be aggressive was earlier when England dominated, but once Italy are dominating you do need to react to that), but has a much higher counter attacking threat and is disrupting their rhythm much more. Win the ball, knock it wide to Sancho, he carries it forward, Rashford and Kane occupy the centre backs and Sterling drifts in to meet the cross near the back post.
Rashford is also, on paper, one of your best penalty takers so there's that insurance policy too through bringing him on.

Maguire was given a list of the penalty takers so It was decided beforehand, and that was probably decided in training but theres a big difference between training and being there with the world watching.

So why would the media say Grealish is at fault? Lame.

Funny enough I find the men to be worse. Most women I know who've enjoyed the tournament and don't normally follow football, have followed it in the knowledge that their understanding of what is happening is that we have to get the ball in the next. Men will absolutely try and blag it and sound as knowledgeable. Yeah I would agree, saying 99% were women was probably pretty harsh We all know blokes like that, try to sound off like they know more about football than Fergie and Clough combined. Then talk a load of complete tosh. Some of them even turn up on national broadcasts as co-commentators FFS.

Also, between Phillips and Rice, Phillips had the better tournament didn’t he? Yep. Apparently Rice was 'like a Rolls Royce in midfield' last night but I didn't even realise he had been taken off for Henderson until I wondered why he wasn't taking a penalty.

Absolute Scum.
An official probe has been launched after a mural honouring footballer Marcus Rashford was defaced following England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday night, police have announced.
Graffiti – which Greater Manchester Police (GMP) described as “racially aggravated” – appeared on the artwork, in Withington, Manchester, after the match.
It was not immediately clear what was written but images show a local man, Ed Wellard, covering the words up with bin liners.
GMP said it would be working alongside Manchester City Council and the artist who originally created the powerful image of the Manchester United and England striker “to ensure this graffiti is removed and the mural is repaired as soon as possible”.

Yeah Southgate said he chose the designated takers. I agree there’s a difference between training and the big occasion and I don’t think Saka should’ve been taking that pen. But I suppose from Southgate’s perspective, this is the same method he used for the previous two shootouts and England won them both.

He was getting bullied by Chiesa on several occasions
