The positive isn’t that we finished 3rd but that we did it from a seemingly hopeless position. Gives us something to build on next season. Ignoring the last couple of league games performance wise, we’ve been one of the best sides in the league in the 2nd part of the season.
Also think it’s a positive that despite being far from our best in recent weeks we’ve still remained unbeaten in the league.
Now down to the owners to do their bit and build on the good feeling at the club right now.
Pretty incredible that we finished 3rd given how dire we were for the 1st part of the season. Quite delighted about this, much less embarrassing than a lot of what we had to deal with over the last 7 years.
This is part of an article in the Independent today. It really lays bare just how mediocre Utd have become under Woodward.
‘Because for all the valid talk of progress after Sunday’s win at Leicester City, United’s final total of 66 points is exactly the same as last season. They finished sixth then, but third now. On average, 66 points has been enough to secure fifth in the Premier League. It is typically a Europa League total, rather than Champions League standard.
And in recent years, United have usually landed around that same mark. Their league points totals since Ferguson’s retirement now read 64, 70, 66, 69, 81, 66, 66. Other than the outlier of Mourinho’s 2017-18 runners-up, all of those fall in a range that normally results in a finish between fourth and sixth place.
That is what post-Ferguson United have been: top-four contenders rather than certainties. Next season, to maintain the current sense of forward momentum, Solskjaer will hope to avoid such a close race for Champions League qualification. To do that, he needs sensible, future-proof squad-building, unlike what was seen in the past.
United are back where they belong, but there is much work to do over the coming weeks if they are to stay there.‘

That's just the problem...we have become mediocre and are in that bunch with Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and probably Wolves now...we are miles off Citeh and the vermin...we need serious investment in the team and the squad...
But we all have our doubts about this happening...the annoying thing is that since Bruno arrived, we have started to look like a team again, not just an assembly of players...
I still doubt that Ole is the man for the job and doubt even more that the Glazers will sanction the kind of spend required to get us up where we belong...
If we're truly honest with ourselves we all know deep down Ole isn't the guy.
He's not,we all know that & with reference to article Stewart has posted about,it really enforces the point, mediocrity has become acceptable & also cheaper to fund than having ambition to be best.
This all comes back too the Glazers,Woodward & they way they run the club & the amount of debt leveraged onto the club, again we all know this.
Woodward once said that the Football side of the business had not direct impact on the finances, however the finances do very much impact of the football side, debt will now prevent us from ever getting back to being the best.
Glazers/Woodward will be very relived that we have scrapped into the top four, how much of that extra cash & the cash retained from the Adidas deal will actually be invested in the team??? very little is my guess.
Mt point being because of what the Glazers & Woodward have done to the club,as supporters we have to accept the mediocrity is as good as it's ever going to be,OGS has achieved that this season & the owners will be delighted.

This. And had we finished 5th, you'd have to say that that was par for this squad. In ways, we've over-acheived this season. 2 Cup Semis, a good European run and a top 3 finish. But we're so far behind the top 2, and Chelsea's signings make me wary that they'll be a proper force next season too, to the point where we're going to need a genius of a manager to compete with those, because we're not going to do it by making signings.

Ole may not be the guy long term but he’s laid down a very good foundation for the next manager. A very exciting attack, which looks now to be bolstered with Sancho and an improved back 4 from last season. We had the youngest starting 11 on average in the league, which is a credit to Ole for shipping out some of the deadwood. There is still some work to do in that regard but he is doing the right things.

That’s fair! I think he deserves at least another season now he’s got us back into the CL and now the spotlight is on the board to fully back him. Absolutely no excuses to not bring in the signings he’s requesting

exactly that. i also dont think he is the right guy to bring us back to the top. but he seems to be the man who builds a foundation, unites the squad and players and at least tries to make us play attractive football again (for most of the times). sacking him now would be a disaster while bringing in someone with experience would also not guarantee instant success as we have seen with jose and van gaal. if he can get some of the players he wants this summer and if he can build upon the second part of this season, delivering performances with more stability and closing the gap further to liverpool and city, then he has done a good job. and when he eventually leaves in a year or two, whoever takes charge after him will be handed a young, hungry, stable, united and talented squad who hopefully will have also won a trophy or two.
also that part being mentioned about 66 points. its been a shit and crazy season. 66 points is terrible but since january i think we have picked up more points than liverpool or city. our best points total since sir alex was 81 under mourinho. 81 points was more than we had in the treble season and no one would argue that joses team that year was better than the legendary 99 team. i know, it doesnt say shit. but i`m trying to not look at the 66 points argument. what i`m trying to do and hopefully with good reason (which remains to be seen), is to focus on what team we have seen since january. and only one way to prove if in the end its better to focus on that: by starting the new season the way we ended this one since the arrival of bruno.

You also have to consider how many points we dropped from winning positions this year as well. I believe it’s 6 or 7 draws where we had the lead. No one would be complaining if we had 78 or 80 points. Part of that does fall on Ole maybe for his tactics and defensive shape but we saw the calamity of that equalizer against Southampton and it’s not entirely on him. The players need to perform as well. If we get a CB to partner Maguire along with Sancho and a few depth signings, we are capable of getting our highest points total since Fergie retired.
I think the question for Ole, and any manager, is: if they're backed (giant if I know), can they win us the title within two years? That has to be the benchmark IMO.
I'm not sure Ole can.
