Should be the final nail in Maguires coffin with Onana in goal aswell. You need defenders switched on and alert when he's passing the ball out, Maguire isn't switched on enough and guaranteed he'll lose the ball somehow and hasn't got the pace to recover. Love Dave to bits and can never really criticise him as a keeper for what he's done for us but I do like to see us having a keeper that isn't just good with the ball at his feet but also commanding in the air. The two area's Dave unfortunately lacked in.

People are going to say I'm being negative but Real aren't really pressing Onana at all. He's making 5,6,10 yard passes under no pressure and there are a couple of basic saves. I have no idea how anyone can watch that video and see what is so 'transformative'. I imagine people are basing their opinions of him being transformative for Utd on his career to date, not some video of a preseason game that’s a couple of minutes long. I know I am.

Teams aren't going to bother pressing a keeper that they know can beat their press at ease and start an attack that see's 4 or 5 of their players caught upfield. They pressed De Gea because it was the most logical choice against him.

We shouldn’t make assumptions about how 19 teams will play us based on 90 minutes with a new goalie. Ofcourse they will press us because we’re not the team we used to be.

You look to win games by exposing the oppositions weakness and countering their strengths. Hyper confident teams like City or Liverpool I've no doubt will play their usual way and press us, but a lot of others won't. Teams pressed the shit out of De Gea, Maguire, Fred and McTominay because why wouldn't you? They are a bunch of players with limited ball playing ability, and no coaching thanks to Ole in charge. It's low risk and high reward. Onana, Varane, Martinez and Casemiro are all excellent on the ball and press resistant, and are being coached by a very good coach in ETH. Teams will very soon learn that by having a bunch of your forwards pressing only to be exposed by quick one touch passes is a sure fire way to lose against United. It's weird to think teams will just keep playing against United the way they did 2 and 3 years ago, despite completely different players, different coaches, different manager and different style.

I just disagree mostly but you have valid points. We’ve dropped the most points versus teams that sit deep who we can’t break down. Not having an effective striker certainly impacts that. It’s begun to change some in the last 12 months. If you press we will score against you, and if we have a shit game in our half we will lose, badly, but usually not. A lot of these pressing errors that buried public opinion of De Gea were in Europe if I remember right. I just worry Onana will get blind sided by the athleticism and pace in the prem, everyone knows Italy is not that. Hoping it works out.
