Alan Smith is first and foremost a striker. Except for a rare occasion, looked lost back in the midfield, a touch better when attacking. We thinks the experiment to replace the unreplaceable has failed, and the injury was a nail in that coffin. Although I truly admire Alan, I think the best he can hope for is to enter in the second half as a replacement for, or an option to Saha, or maybe as a third striker. Or suitable insurance to our injury prone forwards.

Smithy should stay in the center mid, what better place on the pitch to give confidence and belief to the rest of the team like he does... he can still surge forward and yes it would take him time to get used to it again after injury, but with his attitude he's well capable. His influence and attitude is so great if he can get it into those around him, it can only be good for us. Fergie will find the best place for him but personally, i believe its in midfield.

Stop pissing around with him and let him play his natural position up front. He's not a midfielder, though he tried his best, he did enough when he first joined when as a team we were struggling and he was bailing us out playing up front to convince me he was a striker.

Did you read my article? 6 Prem goals in 22 starts and 31 appearances. I'm sure the likes of Bruce have matched that in the past!

Yeah i did, but having a poor goal to game ratio doesn't make him a midfielder. Just means he's not a prolific striker.

This is Manchester United, not Birmingham where they play strikers who don't score.

I see him as our utility man now that P.Neville has gone, we'll need him to play both imo, and he's proved he can play both and right midfield aswell! Don't like the nic name smudger though, god that sounds like fudger!

If every player who wasn't prolific was made a midfielder what would have happened to the likes of Sparky? Smith is a forward that doesn't score that often, why make him into a midfielder that scores none at all, and for that matter creates nothing at all, and picks up runners at all, need i go on?

If he's a striker who doesnt score many goals, and you think he should play as a striker, then we should sell him.

If he's a striker who doesnt score many goals, and you think he should play as a striker, then we should sell him. Fair enough. Though your stats are taken at a time when as a team we were struggling, and in my opinion he hasn't been given the chance as a striker when we've been playing well as a team- 2nd half of this season especially because he was injured. I mean judged on 22 starts! his stats weren't brilliant at Leeds but then they too played him out of position the season they got RELEGATED. ;D
