Bayern Munich are considering making a move for Manchester United's unsettled striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Holland international fell out of favour at Old Trafford and, despite reports on Tuesday that he could commit to remaining at United, the German Double winners are hoping to lure the World Cup star to the Allianz Arena.
Bayern are keen to boost their squad to make a real UEFA Champions League challenge next season and van Nistelrooy would appear to be on their list of potential targets.
"He wanted to join us in 2001 in case his move to Manchester United fell through," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Bild.
"We are not doing anything behind Manchester United's back but, first of all, we must find out whether he is really on the market for a fair price."
The signing of van Nistelrooy would be a major coup for the Bavarian giants, who have lost talismanic skipper Michael Ballack to Chelsea.
The former PSV Eindhoven star would find a friend in fellow Dutchman Roy Makaay in Munich and Bayern also have Claudio Pizarro, Roque Santa Cruz and new signing Lukas Podolski competing for striking slots next term.

Well then, all together now ‘’’We all hate the Germans, we all hate the Germans ‘’
It’s the Champions League final, it’s a rematch, Bayern Munich – Manchester United, we’re 1 – 0 up, hands on the trophy, on comes Ruud for Bayern and bangs two past us, nooo. We’ve lost the trophy. Oh, I wouldn’t know what I’d do.
If we’re getting rid of him, despite the fact he stated he wants to stay, I’d want the biggest and best price for him, and if that’s to be from Bayern, then so be it.
