From ITV:
Manchester United have rejected claims that they wrote to the Football Association to ask for star striker Wayne Rooney to be withdrawn from England's World Cup squad.
The Red Devils had indicated that they believed the 20-year-old former Everton trainee would not play any part in Germany 2006 until the knockout stages following his recent broken foot.
However, it became increasingly clear that England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson did not agree having seen Rooney in training in Baden-Baden.
And he duly deployed Rooney as a second-half substitute against Trinidad and Tobago, hours after independent medical experts Angus Wallace and Chris Moran had passed him fit to make his World Cup debut.
Manchester United said of the withdrawal claims: "This is completely without foundation. As a member of the England squad, we have no right to demand Wayne Rooney or anyone else be withdrawn."

The media are pissing me off with this story now. United released a statement that they are happy with Rooney's participation in the WC moments after the Independent assessors said he could play vs. T&T.
Now the papers, tv & radio seem to be waging a war with United...and I feel hurt by it and I know many other United fans will. At this time, it should be everyone behind the country yet they still want to single out United fans, players, staff....if they continue to do it I'd be happy to stop following England because Sir Alex and United has always got my support over anybody else.

Southern-based media up to its usual tricks; create a bit of nationwide animosity towards United. Surprised the club even responded to the claims.

This is starting to annoy me and I'm on the other side of the Atlantic! They can't be happy that Rooney's in Germany and was back in action yesterday? I didn't see the United secret police trying to load Rooney back on a plane nor did I see SAF clinging to Rooney's leg when he first left for Germany. It's not fair to target United as being the only club concerned with the health of their players because this is affects clubs everywhere. I'm sure Mourinho isn't going to be happy if at the start of the season Ballack and Sheva are out because of injury. This just sounds like the media is trying to keep the story alive despite the fact that there doesn't seem to be one at all. How about focusing on the WC and leaving United alone?
